Alberta Josephine Pobanz, born on July 22, 1930, in Flat Rock, Michigan, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on March 22, 2025, in Trenton, Michigan. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Alberta, affectionately known for her love of cookies, earned the endearing moniker "Cookie Monster" among her family. Her kitchen was often filled with the delightful aroma of freshly baked cookies, which she loved to share with others. Though she often claimed she wasn't hungry, she could never resist a good cookie. Proudly calling herself "Big Bird," she brought joy and laughter to those around her with her feisty spirit and sense of humor.
A devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers, Alberta's enthusiasm for baseball was infectious. She cherished her quiet moments at home, where she found contentment in reading books, solving crosswords, and completing jigsaw puzzles. Known for her competitive nature, she enjoyed playing games with vigor and determination.
Alberta's life was marked by her stubborn yet loving personality, and her presence was a source of strength for her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Pobanz; her parents, Jeanie and Martin Schoen; and her siblings Martin, George, Marian, Bill, Albert, John, and Alice.
She is survived by her loving children, Bonnie (Hank) Chawansky and Denise (Jerry) Cahalan; her cherished grandchildren, Holly (Dan), Melanie (Andrew), and Zachary; and her adored great-grandchildren, Ken, Chloe, Emily, Matthew, Joshua, Caleb, Hannah, Elise, and Griffin. Alberta also leaves behind her dear siblings, Gene (Thelma) Schoen, Catherine Dotson, and Edna (Bob) Lemke.
Alberta Josephine Pobanz will be remembered fondly for her love of life, her dedication to her family, and her indomitable spirit. Her memory will forever be a blessing to those who had the privilege of knowing her.

goodbye to sweet sweet Berta. My big bird (as a kid I thought it was birda and even though she was 4 feet tall she was big to me)
She was my second mom, I owe so much to her she taught me so much.
We sang together, did puzzles, watched her husband Fred Rogers ha ha
My favorite memories is staying at her house for the weekend, I got to be the water cup boy at church and meet all her friends (she was loved by so many) we played Yahtzee with her sister Alice. She made a fantastic apple pie and she is reason why I cut the skin off my kids apples today.
She was definitely a ray of sunshine on a rainy cloudy day, I remember having a bad day at school but then when I seen her green Ford focus at the house everything was going to be ok and she made sure of it!
I love you Berta, thank you for dedicating so much of your time and love on our family
Now you get to be the coach in heaven, I know you will not let your team down.

My brothers and I were lucky enough to have Berta as our nanny for many years. Although she hated water, boats and cats which were staples of our existence at that time it made me laugh to think of how much she enjoyed telling us about why those things were just the worst. She was such a strong person and it seemed like nothing would ever slow her down. She talked a lot about her daughters and grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was so proud of her family. She loved to listen to baseball games on an ancient little radio she would carry with her. She was always looking out for mother Earth by tucking her tissues in her sleeve to reuse them for later. She hated Gullah Gullah island and was happy to tell us all about why. She made me a turkey sandwich with butter and I was so mad that she put butter on it. I told her I didn't like it like that!! But I tried it and now I make it that way for my kids too. She always gave us mentos before she left every evening so that we were not sad. She was a colorful, spirited and genuine person who lived her life as she pleased. I used to have nightmares about this day when she would leave us and it would feel like it couldn't be real. But here we are and I just feel grateful to have had her in my life. Thank you Berta, love you and we will miss you.

Berta was such a friendly & fun person to be around. We laughed a lot. I remember we played games & would tease each other, then laugh some more. I really enjoyed getting to know her & she will be dearly missed.
