Alessandro "Alex" Scarpone

Alessandro "Alex" Scarpone, 82, of Claymont, Delaware passed away surrounded by his loving family on Monday, February 6, 2023. Born in Teramo, Italy on March 11, 1940, he was the son of the late Raffaele and Maria (Ruggieri) Scarpone.
Alex was a valued employee of the DuPont Company for 32 years. Never without his Phillies or Eagles cap, he enjoyed gardening, horseshoes, and bowling. He even bowled a perfect 300. A natural engineer, there was nothing Alex could not repair; if it was broken, he'd find a way to fix it.
What Alex cherished more than anything was spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by his devoted and loving wife of 61 years, Janice. Alex and Janice began every morning at the kitchen table with coffee and a card game of 500 Rummy. They did everything together including antiquing and were faithful members of Holy Rosary Church. Born in Italy and honored to be an American citizen, Alex proudly displayed his American flag while spending quality time every weekend on the beach at Cape Henlopen State Park with his family. Preparing delicious grilled meals and playing horseshoes with family and friends made him happiest. Sunday dinners, holidays, and weekend visits with family were special times for Alex. As a father, he never missed a sports game, or wavered in his devotion. As a PopPop, Alex was supportive of each grandchild's pursuits. He enjoyed attending sporting events, award ceremonies, plays, and concerts. If Alex's grandchildren were participating, so was he!
Alex's passing will be deeply felt by his loving family and the many friends he leaves behind. The family takes comfort knowing Alex is reunited in eternity with his beloved grandson, Alex (Big Al).
Alex is survived by his wife, Janice (Cushing) Scarpone; his children, Stephen Scarpone (Renee), Mark Scarpone (Barbara Ann) and Joanna Woods (Ken); his grandchildren, Samantha, Nicholas, Dominic and Vincent Scarpone; his sister, Emilia Tartaglia.
He was predeceased by his grandson, Alex Scarpone; his brothers, Simone, Aldo and Mario Scarpone; his sisters, Evana Vitelli and Ilda Bruni.
Family and friends are invited to visit at Holy Rosary Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont on Tuesday, February 14 from 10:00 – 11:45AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00PM, immediately followed by interment in Cathedral Cemetery.
