Alex B. Abes, age 64 years, of Readington Township, NJ, passed away the evening of Friday, September 27, 2024, at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born October 19, 1959, in Nueva Ecija, Philippines, he was the son of Juliana (Bote) Abes and the late Marcelo Abes, Sr. He grew up in General Tinio, Nueva Ecija, Philippines and immigrated to the United States in 1988. He had lived in Hunterdon County, NJ since 2002.
After earning his mining engineering degree from the Mapua Institute of Technology, he would go on to rank sixth place in the National State Boards for Mining Engineering. Known for his attention-to-detail and ability to think things through, he had a successful career as a mining engineer supervisor at Atlas Mining Corporation. Upon immigrating to the United States, he worked as a chemist for U.S. Surgical Corporation and eventually a research scientist working for Bristol Myers Squibb for over twenty years.
Mr. Abes was a member of The Papaya Residents of East Coast America, Inc. (PRECA, Inc.) and acted as a Board of Director. He delighted in spending time on his cattle farm where he also harvested mangos. He took pride in his vegetable garden, where he grew ampalaya, tomatoes, peppers, string beans, eggplant, among others. Incredibly generous, he was giving to both his family and the community.
In addition, in his spare time he enjoyed tennis, pickleball, bicycling and hiking. He was also an avid Miami Heat fan.
A man of actions, his family will remember him as a man of few words, but when he spoke his words were impactful and carried weight. However, he did have a sense of humor and would often laugh at his own jokes before he could get the punch line out!
Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his loving wife of thirty-six years, Zenaida (Reyes) Abes; his children: Leslie Ta and her husband Sam, Jami Abes and her fiancé Jeremy Delgado, and Kenneth Abes; three grandchildren: Cole Ta, Nolan Ta, and Juliana Ta; as well as ten siblings and their spouses: Gloria Ronquillo and her husband Romeo, Legardo Abes and his wife Lita, Demetrio Abes and his wife Perlita, William Abes and his wife Ellen, Marcelo Abes Jr. and his wife Ollie, Zenaida Jagonase and her husband Rico, Nover Abes and his wife Gigi, Teresita Olitan, Lizalyn Arenas and her husband Aylmer, and Gil Abes and his wife Placida.
