Alex Louis "Alabama Al" Thomas, 69, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2025, in Jonesville, Michigan. Born on March 20, 1956, in Lebanon, Kentucky, Alex lived a life rich in music, faith, generosity, and connection.

A lifelong devout Catholic, Alex was deeply rooted in his faith and was a dedicated member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. He spoke to the Lord daily and regularly attended Mass throughout his life. His spiritual curiosity extended beyond his own tradition. He respected all religions and found joy in visiting other places of worship and learning about the beliefs of others.

Alex's heart was as big as his personality. Known for his charm and warmth, he had an extraordinary ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Whether through a shared laugh or a heartfelt conversation, he left lasting impressions on everyone he met. His compassion was especially evident in his quiet but steadfast support for the homeless community, an extension of the kindness that defined him.

Music was the rhythm of Alex's soul. A true blues man with a harmonica never far from reach, he brought joy to countless ears over the years. If you met Alex even once, chances are you heard him play, whether it was an impromptu tune at a gathering or a full set on stage at one of Louisville's dive bars or local festivals. His love for live music wasn't just a hobby; it was part of who he was.

Alex also had a deep connection to the earth. With a green thumb and an eye for beauty, he cultivated award-winning landscapes and bountiful vegetable gardens. Friends and family knew to approach his hot peppers with caution, but always with admiration for their flavor and fire.

He is lovingly remembered by his children: son Andy Ray Thomas and daughter Mary Quinn Thomas; grandsons Seth and Collin; sisters Theresa Mascagni (Frank), Patti Coury (Tim), Teri Thomas (Creig Stark), Gloria Thomas, and Glenna Hazen (Sam); brother Philip John Thomas Jr.; ten nephews; five nieces; and countless but very close cousins.

Alex was preceded in death by his parents, Philip John Thomas and Hannah George Thomas.

Though we mourn his passing, we celebrate the vibrant legacy he leaves behind-a legacy built on music that moved souls, gardens that nourished bodies and spirits, faith that guided every step of his journey, and love that touched so many lives.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 6, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home, located at 3800 Bardstown Road in Louisville.

Yesterday

I am saddened to hear the new of Alex's passing. I will never meet a more genuine person like Alex. He could always change the atmosphere in a room with his smile and that harmonica! I don't think I've ever seen him without one! Louisville lost a legend for sure. My heart goes out to his family... Godspeed Alex-

Rest in peace, Alex. You've always been a good friend and companion for so many musicians on the blues stages.

Rest in Peace my friend.
Thank you for the fond memories from grade school football to fishing with my brothers and trips to the farm.
