Alexander Moran, known to many as "Al," passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2025, at Maine Medical Center in Portland, surrounded by family. He was 79.

Born in the Bronx, New York, on August 31, 1946, Al grew up proud of his Italian heritage and Bronx roots. At 17, he left school to join the U.S. Navy in 1963, beginning what would become a remarkable 38-year military career. He was first stationed at the Cutler Naval Radio Station near Machias, Maine, before serving in the Navy Reserves, and later the Air National Guard.

Al returned to school and earned his Master's, later serving as a middle school teacher and vice-principal in the 1970s. In the early 1980s, he continued his service by joining the 243rd Engineering Installation Squadron of the Maine Air National Guard, where he remained until his retirement in 2006 as a Senior Master Sergeant. His career included multiple deployments to Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and he was awarded the Bronze Star in recognition of his dedication and courage.

Beyond his career, Al was known for his humor and hospitality. He loved carpentry, golf, grilling, a good cigar, and time with friends. He was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus and the kind of neighbor who showed up with a snowblower when you needed it most. Al's New York–style cheesecake, a cherished family recipe, became his signature contribution to holidays and gatherings; fittingly, the recipe will be shared on prayer cards in his memory.

Al is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Anita (Baiguy) Moran; his daughter, Anastazya Mattox of Windham; his stepsons, Shane Perry and wife Melanie Brooks of Orono, and Todd Perry of Biddeford; and his grandchildren, Rianna Mattox of Boston, Alexander Mattox of Syracuse, New York, and Ian Perry of Orono. He also leaves behind his brother, John Moran of Piscataway, New Jersey, and his family.

He was predeceased by his mother, Catherine; his twin brother, Salvator; and his brother, George.

A viewing will be held at Hope Memorial in Biddeford on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a religious service from 11:00 a.m. to noon. Al will be buried at the Maine Veterans Cemetery in Springvale (date to follow soon).

In lieu of flowers, Al's family asks that you honor his memory by hugging your loved ones, showing kindness to strangers, and giving to a charity close to your heart.
