Alexander Vap Obituary

Alexander Robertson Vap, M.D.

January 16, 1982 - January 21, 2025

Alexander Robertson Vap, M.D., died of metastatic cancer of the thymus gland on January 21, 2025, in Richmond, VA. He had just turned 43. Diagnosed a year earlier, he fought the disease valiantly. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Alex leaves behind his wife, Hailey Pylman Vap, and two beautiful little girls, Caroline Anne, four, and Elizabeth Robertson, almost two; his parents, James Gordon Vap, M.D. and Jeanne Robertson Vap, of Chevy Chase, MD; his sister, Melissa Vap Leggett, her husband, Matt Leggett, and their children, Murielle, Georgiana and Cressida, also of Chevy Chase; and "big brother", James Gordon Vap II (Gordie), who lives in Charlotte, NC, with his wife, Tracy, and children Jake, Will, Sophie and Charlotte.

Alex was a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and an Associate Professor of Orthopedics at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond. He joined the faculty in 2016. He authored 64 academic papers and collaborated on multiple medical textbooks. He was active in numerous professional societies and an active presenter at various orthopedic association meetings.

Alex built a big following at VCU, as evidenced by his long days seeing clinic patients and a busy surgery schedule. Having been an athlete himself, Alex had a special rapport with his sports injury patients. He loved being a team doctor to young athletes. Most weekends found him driving great distances to cover a variety of athletic events. He covered men's football, basketball, soccer, and lacrosse, plus women's field hockey and lacrosse. He especially enjoyed being head team physician at William & Mary and covering games at VCU and Longwood University. He also served as the team doctor for the Richmond AA Flying Squirrels Baseball Team.

As an orthopaedic resident in training at Duke University, (graduating in 2015) Alex covered the sidelines as team doctor for many sports -- football, lacrosse, soccer and of course, the famous Duke basketball team.

While attending Bowman Grey Wake Forest University Medical School (graduating in 2010), he coached a local high school lacrosse team--and played in the annual docs vs. cops ice hockey game!

After finishing his residency training at Duke, Alex completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine at the prestigious Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, Colorado. At Steadman, he provided coverage for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard teams, traveling as far as Scandinavia and China for international competitions.

After his year at Steadman, Alex completed an International Complex Knee Sports Medicine Fellowship at Ulleval Hospital in Oslo, Norway.

Alex and Hailey were engaged at the historic St. John's Church in Richmond in 2018 and married in September of 2019 in a spectacular wedding at an historic estate overlooking the James River.

Born and raised in Chevy Chase, Maryland, Alex cherished his ties to Washington. He was a member of Chevy Chase Club and the Metropolitan Club of Washington. He later joined the Country Club of Virginia, where he put aside his hockey and lacrosse pads to work on his golf game.

Alex attended Primary Day School and Blessed Sacrament before graduating from St Albans in 2000. While at St Albans, Alex earned the rank of Eagle Scout and captained both the Ice Hockey and Lacrosse teams. He had learned to play hockey at Chevy Chase Club--from mite to midget and during his junior and senior high school years traveled the East Coast on weekends playing for the AAA Little Caps. He was a superb skater, fierce competitor, and team player, liked and respected by his teammates and their parents. His only competitive solo performance was the Marine Corps Marathon in 2014. He made his four-hour cutoff goal--"so I never have to do this again!"

As an undergraduate at Harvard, he played Varsity Lacrosse. He was a four-year letterman and voted a team captain his senior year in 2004. Alex was also awarded Harvard lacrosse's Herman Hammerman Unsung Hero award. To his great surprise, (he missed the email) -- Alex graduated cum laude from Harvard. He was a real history buff, majoring in European History.

Alex was a devoted, loving husband and father. He always put his family first and showed them true unconditional love. He introduced Caroline to ice skating at age three and loved to take his girls on the golf course. Many of his family's most cherished memories were made at home and on family vacations.

Alex climbed mountains in Wyoming with his sister, Melissa. He fished with his dad. He hunted birds and ducks with his brother, Gordie. He skied double black diamonds with his brother and sister, beating them down the mountain while his mom watched from the nearby intermediate slopes!

Alex was a compassionate healer. He was a hard worker. He had grit. He had heart.

He will be missed so much by his family and friends.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. February 1st at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Road, Richmond, VA 23229.

Dr Vap was the greatest doctor of all doctors. Kind, caring, thoughtful, confident and did a great job. He saw me first in the VCU hospital after I ended up there from my liver failing, because I was in so much pain and taking Tylenol and Sentara just brushed me off 2 times and the 3rd time they sent me to VCU hospital. What a blessing for me. Dr Vap is the one sent to me and I was in surgery for my shoulder in a week and a half. God Blessed him with all his skills. It is a great lose for all who ever came into his life in anyway. He is God's great son and walked the earth in God's way. He now walks with his Father and we will for ever miss him. Blessings to his family and friends.

3 years ago, Dr. Vap was my hip surgeon. He took me from a broken runner to one who is now flourishing, not just in sport but in life. I am forever grateful for Dr. Vap and all he has done to help those around him. He will truly be missed.

Dr. Vap was one of my many doctors at VCU. He was always so kind and compassionate and caring about my whole well being, always asking how I was doing as a whole, as well as asking about my children. Knowing my great health issues and the fact that I am a single mom, he made sure to always let me know he truly cared. He was a brilliant compassionate doctor that will be missed by so many. I know there are no words to help the deep heart hole, but know my heart and prayers are with you and your family. God bless you and give you comfort now and in the days to come. May you feel His loving arms around you.

I have lightheaded memories of babysitting Gordie & Alex when they were toddlers. Alex was adorable, active, curious & a most mischievous tot!! He kept me on my toes as a teenage babysitter! Several years later, Alex was our guest of honor at my little son's very exclusive, "by invitation only", birthday party! Grant it, Alex & his siblings were accompanied by his wonderful mom, Jeanie, joining myself, my mother, and my 3 kids (to include the birthday boy, Jay!). As I said, exclusive! I will never forget that tiny, 'lil party...nor, will I forget Alex being there, forever in one of my favorite, memories from a very cherished time in my life. Rest in splendid peace, Alex. May God cloak your beautiful family, parents & siblings in His comfort & love.

Compassionately,

I first met Vap when I was a medical student researcher at The Steadman Clinic, he immediately made me feel like I was one of the sports medicine fellows. Always including me, always teaching. He continued as an incredible mentor to me from that point forward, though I think he was disappointed in me when I went to Stanford instead of Duke for orthopedic residency. He shared in the excitement with me when I matched at The Steadman Clinic for fellowship 7 years after we first met. I followed in his footsteps and spent time doing training in Norway as well. He always was there for me from the tough times of residency to the highs of living and doing surgery in Oslo. I will deeply miss Vap, but will live life the way he did and the way he would want me to moving forward.

“Dear Alex’s Family,
We are heartbroken that we can’t be there to comfort you for your loss of Alex. I have wonderful memories of Alex as a very young boy in California chasing a ball around and around the driveway with a hockey stick.. Perhaps it was that drive that drove him to accomplish more in his very short life than most would in a lifetime. It is 8:30 A.M. here in California. Alex’s funeral has just started in Virginia. I know you are feeling our heartfelt love across the country.

Barbara and I are deeply saddened to hear about Alex´s passing, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to Gordon, Jeanne, and family. Although it's been years since we have seen Alex, we cherish the memories of the times we and our kids spent together in Alex´s teenage years. We especially and fondly recall those ice hockey days at St. Albans and Chevy Chase, with Alex leading the charge both on and off the ice. As an accomplished scholar, athlete, and family friend, Alex will be deeply missed by the Lott family.

Dr. Vap was always quick to smile when we told him he never seemed "in a hurry"! He will be greatly missed by the Richmond VA PACU staff. He was taken oh so quickly and so very soon.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Dr Vap´s passing. I have been his patient since January of 2017. I had a long history of knee and hip issues. Even when typical treatments didn´t seem to work as they should he would never dismiss a symptom. He listened and worked with me to get to the bottom of the issue and worked with me to find a resolution. He didn´t give up and wouldn´t let me give up ever. He helped me through 4 surgeries over the years and always made himself available to answer all my questions. He was not just an excellent surgeon he was also an incredibly kind and compassionate person. Such a tremendous loss for his family, friends, colleagues and patients. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
Deepest sympathy,

Dear Alex's family, I am devastated to hear of Alex's passing. I remember so vividly his passion and dedication for medicine. It was an honor to mentor him along the way--I recall an amazing moment when Alex was shadowing me at Children's National, we went into the Operating Rooms-and coincidentally Gordon was operating on a child that day-Alex was so proud to see his Dad's impact, doing surgery helping a child and family. It is an inspiration to know that he dedicated his own life to that vision. Respectfully and with sadness, Kurt Newman

Such a hard worker, so dedicated, so talented, such grit AND heart as so eloquently stated above. We're all in shock here at the Durham VA medical center. We got to watch Alex over the years mature and grow into the doctor that he ultimately became. What an honor to have known you, buddy. My thoughts and prayers to his family, especially Hailey and their precious little girls.

He was an excellent Dr. and Surgeon! He was always nice and answered my questions when I went with my daughter, Jennifer Wahl, to her appointments. He was on my mind the day before he passed away. I had no idea he was so sick. I pray that God will use the gift he had of helping so many to God´s Honor and Glory! God bless his precious family!

Dr. Vap was such a talented surgeon and physician. I am a long distance runner and he worked with me for over a year on a meniscus tear in my right knee. It finally came down that there was nothing left to do and I needed surgery. He performed a meniscus repair on my right knee. I am fully back running and competing. Dr. Vap was also an incredibly nice guy.
I send my sympathy, thoughts and prayers to his family and to the VCU Team, which were awesome. I am so very sorry.
