January 16, 1939 - February 18, 2026 Robert Charles Sass, 87, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2026, in Richmond, Virginia. Bornon January 16, 1939, Robert lived a life marked by dedication, achievement, and service.
A proud graduate of Michigan State University and the U.S. Navy Officer Candidate School, Robert later earned his MBA from Virginia Commonwealth University. He built a distinguished career as a mechanical engineer and HVAC contractor, notably overseeing the installation of the HVAC system at the Richmond Federal Reserve Building.
Robert served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy from 1960 to 1971, completing multiple tours in Vietnam. His commitment to excellence extended beyond his military and professional life into his personal passions. A talented gymnast during his time at MSU, he also served as a student coach. An avid swimmer and medalist in the Senior Olympics, Robert shared his love for swimming by coaching Special Olympics athletes. His enthusiasm for nature led him to become an active member of the National Audubon Society and a dedicated birder.
Faith played an important role in Robert's life; He was active in theatrical productions with West End Assembly of God's Master's Theatre and was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
Robert is survived by his sons, Wayne Robert Sass and William Falke Sass; his younger brother, George G. Sass; four beloved grandchildren; and his cherished companion of ten years, Barbara Cook. He was predeceased by his parents Charles Joseph Sass and Helen Yengel Sass, as well as his sister Grace Edlund.
