Obituary published on Legacy.com by Wessels & Wilk Funeral Home - Pleasant Ridge on Apr. 13, 2025.
Alexios (Alex) Peter Demos (Gikas) fell asleep in the Lord on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at the age of 95, surrounded by his loving family.
Alex was born in Kalavryta, Greece in 1929. His family experienced challenging times during the WWII Nazi occupation, and the Greek Civil War. He immigrated to Detroit in 1955 at the age of 25 and through his faith and hard work – lived the American Dream.
Alex is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Panayiota (Pat), and his children Anna (John), Alexandros (Kelly), George (Kristen) and Marie (Perry). Loving Grandfather to Arianna, Theodore, Alexios Perry, Alexios George, Peter, and Charlie. Alez is also survived by his sister, Vasu Krokos, of Athens, Greece, as well as nieces and nephews in both the United States and Greece. He was predeceased by his brother, Harry Gikas.
Alex was the proud owner of the Pleasant Ridge Flower Shop for more than four decades, dedicating himself to the business and the community until his retirement in 2003. Working side by side with his wife, Pat, he took great pride in creating beautiful, personalized floral arrangements to countless celebrations for their loyal customers.
Alex's green thumb extended well beyond the flower shop and into his vegetable garden. Every summer, he found great joy in planting and carefully tending to a sprawling garden that produced an abundant harvest for his family and friends to enjoy. Gardening was not just a hobby-it was a passion he nurtured season after season. Even in recent days, he was enthusiastically making plans for what he would plant in the coming summer.
The foundation of Alex's life was built on two unwavering pillars: his deep love for family and his steadfast Greek Orthodox faith. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Alex would go to any length to support his children and grandchildren. He cherished time spent with his grandkids-whether cheering them on at school and sporting events or, in recent years, keeping in touch through FaceTime on his iPad. Though he had only a high school education himself, Alex held a strong belief in the power of learning. He encouraged his children and grandchildren to pursue higher education, always emphasizing the importance of hard work, knowledge, and achievement. More importantly, he wanted them to be good people and love each other.
Alex had a deep faith in the Lord, which was central to his daily life. A devout member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, he regularly attended services with his wife on Sundays and weekdays. He possessed a wealth of knowledge about the lives of the Greek Orthodox Saints, often spending many hours each day reading the Bible and studying their stories. His passion for faith and learning was something he shared with those around him, offering inspiration to family and friends.
Visitation for Alex will be held on Monday, April 14, 2025, from 4:00-8:00 PM at Wessels & Wilk Funeral Home (23690 Woodward,
