ALFONZO EDWARDS was born May 8, 1943 in Bonneau, South Carolina to the late Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Lucille Ferguson Edwards and passed from life to glory on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 after a long illness.
He attended but did not complete the public schools in Bonneau because he needed to help run the family farm, buying and selling livestock for the city Mayor. At the age of 16, he relocated to New Haven, Connecticut and became employed by St. Raphael's Hospital. Al became a member of the Thomas Chapel Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ under the founding Pastor, Elder Luther Tallance Thomas. He was later hired by Yale University as a pot washer and was promoted to Kitchen Prep and then as the Head Chef. Al retired from Yale University after 40 years. While working for Yale, he also worked for a cleaning company and as a caterer.
In 2012, Al become a member of the Walk of Faith Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ under the leadership of Elder Walter Williams, III, faithfully working beside him and serving as a member of the Facilities Care Team and cooking breakfast for the monthly Men's Ministry until he was prevented by illness. He married Rosie M. Buie-Edwards on July 19, 2014. Al loved cooking, fishing, gardening, and maintaining the Church property. He was always ready and willing to serve wherever needed.
Al is survived by his loving wife, Rosie M. Buie-Edwards; one son, Joe Dickey of New Haven, CT; two daughters, Jennette Taylor of Hamden, CT and Lucille Bray (Darryl) of New Haven, CT; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, other relatives, and friends. He also had two special friends, Charlene Melton and Rosa Mercado. He was predeceased by a son, George Edwards; and a special friend, Jennie Edwards.
