It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alfred Allerton Blakley, Jr, age 69, of Providence, NY on March 26, 2025.
Born on November 7, 1955, in Troy, NY, he was the son of the late Alfred A. Blakley Sr. and Helen Blakley (Schneider).
Known affectionately as "Al" to his friends and acquaintances and "Butch" to his family, Alfred grew up in the pastoral town of Broadalbin, NY where he split his time between studies, wrestling and the family business. Upon high school graduation he attended SUNY Maritime, earning an engineering degree and enjoying seeing much of the world by ship in those years with the Merchant Marine Academy.
Afterwards he settled in the town of Providence, working a lifetime in nuclear reactor operations at the Knolls Atomic Power laboratory - Kesselring site and later in Vernon, VT and Oswego, NY: though he always maintained this residence where he raised his family. In his early life he loved camping, hiking and martial arts when he wasn't working on projects, including building his home, gardening, and working on classic cars.
In his later years he enjoyed attending Renaissance Festivals with family and friends and maintaining a presence in the martial arts community. Somehow in all of this he always found time to help a friend or family member in need and has left a mark on many in his community by volunteering as a fireman and working with youth programs and Galway Fish and Game club activities.
Alfred Jr. is survived by his loving children Carla Denn (Dan), Alfred A. Blakley III (Kristyn), and grandchildren Julia Blakley and Marcus Blakley.
In addition to his parents, Alfred was predeceased by his ex-spouse Janice Blakley (Mach), sister Helen (Kitty) Blakley, and half- sibling Barbara Phillips.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 12:00 PM at the A.G. Cole Funeral Home Inc., 215 E. Main Street, Johnstown, NY.
Calling hours for family and friends will be held prior to the service at the funeral home from 11:00 AM until 12:00 PM.
