Obituary published on Legacy.com by B.E. Brown & Co Mortuary on Feb. 22, 2025.
Described by many as the most determined man one can know, Alfred Truman "Maine" Horace Sr had one last goal before heading home to be with the Lord - to celebrate one last birthday with his family. After several years of declining health, and true to his character, Alfred passed away peacefully with his beloved wife Bessie and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren by his side on February 14, 2025, at the age of 76.
Alfred's story began on January 23, 1949, as the oldest of twin boys to the late Frank and Marie Horace. He was born and raised in the historic "Down the Bay Community" of
Mobile, AL. and was a member of St. Peter Claver Catholic Church and attended the school as a young boy. Alfred aka "Snag" met his high school sweetheart, Bessie, while at Williamson High School Class of 1967.
His work ethic and ambitious nature were apparent with his first "real" job at Mobile Rug and Shade. His desire to be the best soared after joining the merchant marines. Alfred traveled the world and was then drafted to the United States Army, serving with valor in the Vietnam War.
He had an entrepreneurial spirit and a strong passion for cars, clothing, cooking and the casino. His career at Scott Paper Company (known today as Kimberly Clark) spanned over 30 years. Alfred along with both his brothers started a family restaurant in Brookley Field called "Horace's Restaurant" where his mother and sisters provided delicious home cooked meals. In 1984, with Alfred as the general contractor, he and his wife built a home and moved the family from Brookley Field to their current residence.
After retiring, he focused his attention to his health, fishing, and enjoying his grandchildren and great grandchildren who affectionately call him "Papa". He volunteered as a football coach at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic School. During his retirement, he also devoted his time and talents to his church family at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. He was a man of faith and served in many capacities at the church and as head usher he has gently beckon each of you to bring the gifts to father during mass. He was good with his hands and could be found at any given time working on or repairing something at the church. He always answered the call to help. One of Alfred's fondest achievements was receiving the Christ the King medal from the Mobile Archdiocese in recognition of his faith through service to his church community.
Although Alfred was a man of many accomplishments, he was most proud of his 55 year marriage with Bessie and the life they built together. He loved his extended family also and was well known for having a "good ole fish fry, crab boil or BBQ" at their home for family and friends alike. He would also showcase his culinary skills on occasion with a breakfast feast with "eggs to order". His love and dedication to his family was unmatched.
Alfred's personality was such that he never met a stranger. He had a special way of telling a story that always ended in a good joke and a "bag of money". He rarely let anyone leave his presence without a sense of laughter and assurance of his genuine care and love. He valued integrity and friendship. He was a wise teacher and mentor to many. He was by far the fairest man and best listener we will ever know.
Alfred is preceded in death by his father, Frank Horace; his mother, Marie T. Horace; his older sisters: Verna Malone and Viola Louise Robinson; twin brother, Alphonse "Pookie" Horace, Sr.; and younger brother, Raymond "Bubba" Horace, Sr.
Alfred and Bessie had three treasured children: L'Tonya (Michael) Horace-Harold RPh, MBA of Dallas, TX, Navy Chief Alfred (Lisa) T. Horace, Jr. (retired) of
Mobile, AL and Dr. Janet L. Horace of Birmingham, AL. Alfred adored his six (6) grandchildren: Tina Holley, Alfred (Brittany) T. Horace III, Crystal Horace, Jordon Harold, Brandie (Maverick) Horace-McCracken and Michael Harold Jr. and six (6) great-grandchildren: McClinton Horace, Anthony Horace, Langston Holley, Calisia Horace, Brandie Horace-McCracken II and Gianna Holley. Alfred leaves to cherish his jokes, stories and memories, devoted family and friends including his aunt, Gloria Rankins; sisters: Sandra Parrot and Eula (John) Bryant, Sybil Thomas (devoted cousin), Cynthia Horace-Ramos (devoted niece and godchild) and Michael "Jack a Diamond" Cook (devoted friend). Alfred also had numerous cherished cousins, nieces, nephews, god-children,neighbors, co-workers, relatives and friends who were very special to him.
Alfred consistently stated how blessed he was to be surrounded by his family and friends especially at the end of his life.
Until the end, he remained an inspiration to us all. He taught us resiliency, compassion, kindness, humor, perseverance, and especially love of family. When it became apparent that God was ready to receive him, he faced his transition with love, courage, faith, dignity and with the joy of what lies ahead. We will miss him every day but will find comfort in knowing he is home with his Heavenly Father.
