Alfred Bradley Smith, 78, passed away peacefully at home on August 5, 2025. Born on October 5, 1946, he was the son of the late William Andrew Smith and Nellie Brown Smith.
A graduate of Plymouth High School, Alfred spent his career at Weyerhaeuser Paper Company, where he was a dedicated and respected employee until his retirement. During his career, he also served as an officer in the local AFL-CIO United Paperworkers' Union, where he advocated for fairness and support for his fellow workers.
Alfred grew up in the Plymouth United Methodist Church, served as an elder at Plymouth Presbyterian Church and most recently attended Gospel Light Church of Christ in Dardens. He shared his love of bluegrass gospel music, playing standup bass with The Gospel Lights praise band. His music brought joy and comfort to many, and his leadership reflected his commitment to community and faith.
In addition to his parents, Alfred was preceded in death by his brothers, Andy Smith of Fayetteville and Kirk Smith of Plymouth.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Julie Smith; his sisters, Mildred Swain and Judy Spruill; his daughters, Dineane and husband Ken of Kittrell, Julia and wife Stephanie of Williamston, and Deborah of Plymouth; and his stepchildren, Rena of Jamesville, Penny and husband Wade of Lexington, and Tyler and wife Alishea of Jamesville.
He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jessica, Michael and Camille; and great-grandchildren, Lakota and Makaylah; and step-grandchildren, Jackson Olivia, and Niklaus.
Like many Plymouth paper mill families, Alfred's parents relocated to North Carolina from West Virginia. He loved to vacation in his beloved, historic Richwood and to camp and hike in the beautiful Appalachian mountains.
Alfred will be remembered for his kindness, love of music, deep devotion to his faith, family, and community, and his eagerness to tell you a story.
A service to celebrate Alfred's life will be held at Gospel Light Church of Christ in Dardens Saturday, August 9 at 2:00 p.m.
