Alger L. Lamb was born in Hagensville, January 2, 1938, the youngest of eight children of Leonard and Laura Lamb.
He passed away Nov 12, 2025 after a short illness.
Alger grew up on the family dairy farm and attended the Heslip School and later graduated from Rogers City High School in 1956.
He married Janet (Flemming) in 1958 and they were parents to Richard Lamb and the late Jonathan Lamb.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Harlan, Leonard, Byron and Neil along with sisters Marion, Hertha and Doris.
After graduating from high school, he sailed on the Great Lakes until the birth of Richard, then delivered milk for Karsten's Dairy. He also worked at the mill at the Calcite Plant. Next, he served as an officer for the Rogers City Police Department where he also served as a fireman.
He followed that with a long career that began in 1967 as a senior insurance adjuster for Citizens Mutual Insurance Company where his territory included all of northern Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula. He often worked storm duty helping people through disasters like the devastating tornadoes in Xenia, Ohio in 1974 and Hurricane Gloria on the East Coast in 1985 along with several other natural disasters over the years.
Alger enjoyed deer hunting at Hagensville Hunting Club for many years, rarely failing to bag a buck during the season and in later years he hunted coyotes with a group of friends in the winter. Each spring made the best maple syrup for his family and each summer tended to a big garden that yielded bushels of vegetables like tomatoes, potatoes, corn, beans, carrots and sugar beets.
Another passion for Alger came on the ballfield, first in the county baseball league followed by many years playing as an all-star outfielder for the perennial league champions Deer Hunt Inn team during the 1960s. He also earned championships around the card table, winning multiple titles in the county spitzer league, and, along with his brother Neil, several first-place prizes in the annual Nautical City Spitzer Tournament.
He served in many volunteer capacities at his church, St. John Lutheran, LCMS of Rogers City including chairman of the board of trustees, deacon, chairman of the annual German dinner and member of the board of Christian Education. Alger had fun as volunteer baker in the annual donut day at the school along with volunteering to keep the church grounds mowed and the bushes trimmed.
He was a master carpenter capable of building most anything from buildings to furniture. And if he made it, there was no doubt it was solid.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years Janet, son Richard (Riconda) and treasured granddaughters Jordyn (Jon) Fisher and Kelleigh (Michael) Erickson and their son, Alger's great grandson Elijah Erickson.
He was lovingly cared for in his final days by the caregivers of Hospice of Michigan and MyMichigan Health Alpena.
A celebration of Alger's life will be Nov. 22 with visitation at 1 p.m. and the funeral at 2 p.m. at St. John Lutheran Church. It will be officiated by the Rev. Joseph Bangert and assisted by Deacon Randy Martens, considered a brother by the family.
Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church and Hospice of Michigan.
