Alice Brown Crompton
August 7, 1922 ~ May 9, 2022
Alice Brown Crompton passed away on May 9, 2022 at 5:45 p.m. Her passing was peaceful; surrounded by loved ones in her treasured Portland Oregon home. She was born on August 7, 1922; nearly 100 years ago in Evanston, Wyoming.
Alice was the last living child of James Brown, Jr and Mary Alice Duncombe. She grew up in a loving home blessed with two brilliant brothers, Joseph William Brown and James Dick Brown and three wonderful sisters, Addie Taggart, Mary Williams and her beloved baby sister, Christine Isenhart.
Alice graduated from Evanston High School in 1940 and attended two years of higher education at the University of Wyoming in Laramie. True to her fun-loving spirit, Alice was always socially active during her youth. She sang in the choir, was a cheerleader, had lots of friends, and loved to dance. Also, Alice enjoyed fashion; she studied fashion, designed and created beautiful clothing, and spent a great deal of time shopping and accessorizing.
In 1943, Alice married her high school sweetheart, Donald LeRoy Crompton "Doog", before he went to fight for our country in WWII. Their first child was born while Donald was away. When he returned from serving in the war, the family moved to Ogden, Utah. During their life together, they had five wonderful children. A short time after their fifth child was born, Donald became ill; he passed away in January 1954. Alice married John Holtz in 1958. They had a short marriage that brought Alice a devoted child who would be her friend and care for her in the later years of her life.
The loss of her husband certainly broke Alice's heart but not her spirit. When Donald passed, she had five children from 9 to 2 years old and no real job experience; her way forward was daunting. Eventually, she entered the workforce, had many jobs, studied accounting and worked her way into the business side of automobile sales. She was a professionally recognized, awarded business manager for Lincoln Mercury when she retired in 1990. Alice moved from Utah to Oregon in 1996 to be closer to her two daughters and their families.
Alice is survived by her six children, Peter James Crompton, 1944; Michael Dee Crompton, 1947; Roger Jay Crompton, 1948; Don Craig Crompton, 1950; Linda Louise Leatham, 1952; Deann Kristine Holtz, 1958. In a family genealogy Alice wrote of her life,
"I had a happy childhood and my life since then, with all the hardships during my marriages and raising my children, with their bad times and good times, it has been a very rewarding life to look back and see that my six children have all become good men and women."
Alice's children have created a legacy of talented, hardworking and loving generations of quality people. Her time on this earth has given the world 6 children, 13 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and so far, 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Alice will be buried next to her husband on Friday, May 27, 2022 at 2 p.m. at Lindquist's Washington Heights Memorial Park, 4500 South Washington Blvd., Ogden, Utah. The service will be officiated by Alice's nephew, Dick Taggart.
Friends may visit with family on Friday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Lindquist's Roy Mortuary, 3333 West 5600 South, Roy, Utah. Order Videos
