Obituary of Alice M. Maciag
Alice (Schmitz) Maciag, 82, passed away peacefully surrounded by her two loving daughters on Saturday February 28, 2026 at Wellspring Lutheran Home in
Monroe, MI.
Alice was born on October 12, 1943 to Edna Marie (Getz) and Frederick Henry Schmitz in Detroit Michigan. They moved to South Rockwood, Michigan in the 1950s and in 1961 she graduated from Trenton High School. In 1958, Alice met the love of her life, Walter Maciag at a dance in Rockwood. She told her best friend Charlotte that "he was the man she was going to marry." They dated for 6 years and were married on April 4, 1964 at St. Stanislaus Kostka church in Wyandotte Michigan.
Walter and Alice bought their first home on 8th street In
Wyandotte, MI. In this little house they were blessed with the birth of their 2 daughters, Michele Marie in 1965 and Marsha Ann in 1966. In 1976, they moved to their home on 19th St where many happy memories were made. They shared a beautiful marriage rooted in faith, devotion and respect. Alice was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker. It brought her great joy taking care of "her girls" and doting on her handsome husband.
Alice was the fashionista of the family – miniskirts, go-go boots, long polished fingernails – and she wore them all with confidence. It was the '60s rolling into the '70s, and she embodied that era with style and grace. Alice also loved music and dancing and passed that love along to "her girls" and eventually her grandchildren. She was also a good singer-singing with her sisters when she was younger and also later in life at church.
She was beautiful on the outside, but even more beautiful within. Family was everything to her. She cherished everyone and doted on them making them truly feel special. That love didn't stop with family – it naturally poured out to others. She had a caring heart that showed up in the simplest, most meaningful ways.
Alice also enjoyed volunteering at her daughter's schools, St. Stans and Our Lady of Mt Carmel and later in life at Mt. Carmel Church helping with the fish frys, rummage sales, and with the church bulletins. She developed many treasured friendships while volunteering and truly loved them all.
She channeled her love into her baking and cooking. You could taste the care she put into her delicious polish food and her yummy holiday cookies and pies. Later in life she enjoyed making different types of jams, which became famously known as gram's jam.
Alice also loved spending time with her beloved sisters and sister in laws. She especially loved doing crafts and selling them at bazaars and lunching weekly with Annie and had many happy memories with Ruth lunching and taking bus trips in the fall to the UP to enjoy the beautiful fall colors in northern Michigan. She also had special relationships and happy memories with her beloved sisters-in-law, Joann Fury, Margie Swiderski and Mary Jane Smith.
Alice had a gentle strength about her – steady, quiet and unwavering. She was very supportive, caring and nurturing.
She was very blessed to be God Mother to Sherry Devine and Kellie Coleman. She truly loved them as her own children and cherished them.
In 1989, her grandniece, Amanda Ososkie, was born. She was like Alice's 1st grandchild. From the very beginning, she cherished her deeply and cared for her from the time she was a baby to early childhood. This brought her great joy and happy memories.
Like most mothers, Alice prayed for grandchildren and was blessed with four beautiful grandchildren: Marissa, Kaitlyn, Brandon, and Robert. "Grammy" loved spending time with her grandkids and taking them to the movies, the park, watching their sporting events and just spending time together. One of her favorite sayings later in life was "let's go bumming around" which meant shopping and lunch. Her grandkids brought her much joy. She was very proud of all of them and loved them with all her heart to the end.
Alice was also very blessed with 3 great grandsons: Bennett, Gino and Eli.
In 2015, Alice bought a cottage in Hale Michigan, and spent many days there with her daughters, her niece Lori, granddaughters, and friends. The memories made in that little cottage were some of the best, happy times.
Alice is survived by her daughters, Michele (Christopher) Hurley, Marsha (Christopher) Wilson; her grandchildren, Marissa (Alex) Spinale, Kaitlyn Hurley, Brandon (Abigail) Wilson, and Robert Hurley; her great grandsons Bennett Wilson, Gino Spinale and Eli Wilson; her sisters, Annie Beyer, Ruth Myers, and Louise Adams; many brothers and sisters in laws; and many loving nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Walter; parents, Frederick and Edna Schmitz; dear sister-in-law Margie Swiderski; and loving grand-niece Amanda Ososkie.
Alice was a wonderful, giving person who appreciated all that life gave her. Even in her diminished state near the end of her life, she quickly became a favorite of the care giving staff at Wellspring Lutheran.
She was blessed with many special, caring people at Wellspring for the last 2 years.
We would like to extend our deepest appreciation to the entire staff for taking such great care of her. We especially want to thank nurses Brenda and Jamie, aides Julie, Roxanne, Sara and Cathy and Hospice ensuring our mom was comfortable and supported, allowing her to pass with dignity and peace.
