Sr. Alice Harris
"SR. MARY AUGUSTA HARRIS, SMSM"
Of Waltham, peacefully entered eternal life in the loving arms of her God on Saturday morning, October 5, 2024 at the Elizabeth Seton Residence in Wellesley at the age of 106.
Sr. Mary Augusta was born in Little River Harbor, Yarmouth, N. S. Canada on July 13, 1918. Beloved daughter of the late James Oscar Harris and Annie Mae (Muise) Harris. Sister was born into a family of six boys and five girls.
She entered the Marist Missionary Sisters of the Society of Mary on February 11, 1948. Sister pronounced her first Vows on August 15, 1950, and made her perpetual profession on August 15, 1957.
Her missionary career has taken her to Australia where she did her Nurses' training in 1952, and then to Bougainville, Papua New Guinea, where she worked as a Nurse from 1959 until 1968. She returned to the United States to work at Maristhill Nursing facility where she worked from 1969 until 1979.
Sister had worked in a Refugee camp in Thailand from 1979 until 1980 and then returned for a Renewal Program. Once again, Sr. Mary Augusta went out on mission, this time to Yemen for the years of 1983 and 1984.
She returned to the United States and gave service at Maristhill and community service in Waltham from 1984 until 1997. Sister was living at our 62 Community until she was missioned to Marillac in 2013, an assisted living facility in Wellesley, MA. Sister has kept very alert and travelled to her family in Canada almost each year to visit her family. Due to declining health, Sister moved to Elizabeth Seton Residence in September 2023.
Sister is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family as well as her loving & devoted Community of Marist Missionary Sisters.
Relatives & Friends are respectfully invited to attend a Mass of the Resurrection in celebration of Sister Mary Augusta's Life at the Marist Missionary Sisters Residence, 62 Newton St, Waltham on TUESDAY morning OCTOBER 15th at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow in the Marist Missionary Sisters Lot at Saint Patrick's Cemetery in Watertown. Visiting Hours will be held prior to the Funeral Mass in the Marist Missionary Sisters Residence from 9:00 am -10:30 am.
