It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of the “Island Pie Lady”, Alice Laurette Marie Toth of South Hero. She passed peacefully, on 11/29/2024, with family by her side.

Alice was a proud Acadian woman, a true embodiment of the Acadian spirit. She was a proud steward of Acadian culture, food, and music. Her meat pies, Poutine Rapée, and Poutine Acadienne were masterfully crafted.

Alice's love of music started at a young age of 6, when she joined her first choir. Her love for music was evident, from her many years being active in the choir at both St. Rose of Lima, and St. Joseph's. Alice was a dedicated parishioner of both churches for many years. In later years, her passion was taking part in the "church pie ladies" spending many many hours passing on her knowledge and expertise of baking.

Alice was born in January of 1939 to Arthur, and Mélanise Daigle, the second youngest of 14 children. She grew up on a farm in St. Charles, New Brunswick. Alice graduated from St. Charles Highschool in 1957 where she went on to study at Fredericton Teachers College.

She met the love of her life, Joseph Toth in 1960 while working as a teacher in Montreal. They married in the fall of 1963.

Alice and Joseph moved to South Hero in 1969, where over the subsequent decades, they became pillars of the community.

Alice went on to touch the lives of countless people in Grand Isle County and beyond, through her over four decades of teaching at both Grand Isle School and Folsom School in South Hero.

Alice is survived by the love of her life Joseph of South Hero, Daughter Micki (Michelle) Hildreth and husband Peter, Son Stephen Toth and wife Bernadette.

Alice is survived by three grandchildren, Troy Toth, and wife Erin, Caitlin Toth, and husband Cody, and Emily Hildreth, and significant other Matt.

She was unwavering in her pride for her grandchildren, and was proud of their successes in life. Caitlin and Troy for their work in the HVAC industry, and Emily for her studies in engineering.

Alice is survived by one great grandchild, William Toth, the apple of her eye, who brought a smile to her face when she needed it the most.

Alice leaves behind two siblings, Huguette Chevarie, and husband Donald, and Cécile Reus, and Husband Fredrick, and adopted sister (niece) Annette Leger, and husband Louis-Philippe.

Aside from family, Alice is survived by a few very special friends that we see as family. Bette Grenon of Grand Isle, Molly Thompson of Shelburne, Ken and Jean Rouchelau of South Hero, Brenda Leclair of Jeffersonville, John Roy of South Hero and so many others.

Alice is predeceased by her parents, 11 siblings, and special friends, Jules and Jeannine Koczan, Jerry Grenon, and Sharon Roy.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at her home away from Home, St. Rose of Lima on Friday December 6, at 10AM.

In lieu of flowers, Alice asks that donations be made to South Hero Rescue, who came to her aid when she was most in need, and who both her daughter (past) and grandson currently have served as volunteers.
