On Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Allan Harold Baker, 74, of Old Fort, peacefully passed from this life while at Mission Hospital in Asheville.
He was born in McDowell County on July 5, 1950 to the late Jesse Turner Baker, Jr. and Julia Burgin Baker.
Allan graduated from Old Fort High School in the class of 1968, where he distinguished himself as an athlete on the football and basketball teams. His competitive spirit and teamwork extended beyond the field, shaping his approach to life and his interactions with others.
Allan was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, a service that shaped his character and instilled in him a sense of duty and dedication. Professionally, Allan made his mark in the local community by initially working for Baker Grading & Landscaping. He then pursued his entrepreneurial spirit by opening his own garage and founding Baker Auto Parts, where many in the area came to rely on his expertise and integrity.
Allan's love for his church family at Greenlee Baptist Church was a testament to his faith and commitment to helping others. He found tremendous joy in this community, fostering friendships that enriched his life. In his leisure time, Allan cherished moments spent attending baseball games with his good friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Johnson Baker, who passed away in 2024, as well as his nephew, Jesse Baker.
Left to cherish his memory are two sons, Todd Baker (Sara) and Joseph Baker (Susan); one grandchild, Jenna Baker; one great-grandchild, Ronja; three siblings, Gail Fields, Tony Baker, and Mark Baker (Denise); a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and beloved friends and neighbors; and his special canine companion, Mika.
The family will receive friends on Monday, March 3, 2025 from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Beam Funeral Service, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 p.m. The interment, with military honors, will take place on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at 12:00 noon at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery for immediate family.
