Allan Richard Bentz, a man whose love for the natural world was only surpassed by his devotion to his family, passed away peacefully at the age of 75 on October 31, 2025, in Traverse City, Michigan. Born on June 16, 1950, in Grayling, Michigan, to the late Richard Rohrman Bentz and Marcia Jean Bentz (nee Geib), Allan's life was a testament to the values of hard work, community service, and the pursuit of adventure.
A loving husband to Linda Sue Bentz, Allan's marriage was a partnership of mutual respect and affection. He was a dear father who instilled the values of integrity and kindness in his children, Christopher (Jen) Hayes, Abigail Ball (Michael Nedeau), and Evan (Karen) Bentz. His role as a grandfather allowed him to share his wisdom and love of the outdoors with his grandchildren, Blair (Blair) Nelson, Emilee Fisher, Avery Jane Ball, and Gwenevere Allan Ball. Allan is also survived by his cousin Robin (Mary) Bentz, their sons, and his cherished dog, Boxita. His sister, Carol Ann Bentz, predeceased him.
Raised and educated in Gaylord, Allan's academic journey led him to Michigan State University, where he graduated with a bachelor's degree. His education paved the way for a successful career as a well site geologist in the oil and gas exploration industry. Allan's work not only reflected his intellectual capabilities but also his commitment to contributing to the energy sector.
Outside of his career, Allan continued to serve his community with the same enthusiasm and dedication. He was an Otsego County Commissioner for over nine years, where he worked tirelessly for the betterment of his community, always ready to listen to the needs of his constituents.
Allan's interests were as vast as the Michigan skies he so loved. From his youth, Allan's passion for the outdoors was evident. He became an Eagle Scout, a prestigious achievement that would shape his lifelong commitment to scouting. Later, he would guide and mentor young minds as a Boy Scout Troop Leader for Troop 14.
The cabin on Black River was Allan's sanctuary, a place where he continued to indulge in hunting and fishing or just relaxing with his beloved dog Boxita. Allan's adventurous spirit also led him to travel, experiencing cultures and landscapes far from home. He found beauty and peace in the depths of Mexico's oceans while scuba diving and relaxation on sun-filled beaches, embracing life's simple pleasures.
Allan enjoyed the simple pleasures in life and asked following his death there was no fanfare, just remember him privately. Please share your stories and memories of Allan at the "Share a Memory" section. Final arrangements have been entrusted to Nelsons Cremation & Funeral Services, 135 N. Center Avenue, PO Box 1548,
