Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Allen Mitchell Burrell
Allen Mitchell Burrell, age 57, left this world peacefully on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at his home in Statesboro, GA, surrounded by the love of his husband and devoted family. Though Allen's journey on earth has ended, the warmth of his spirit and the beauty of his voice will continue to inspire all who knew him.
Born on October 22, 1968, in Preston, Georgia, Allen's life was a testament to compassion, generosity, and the transformative power of music. After graduating from Dodge County High School and Brewton Parker College with a degree in music education, Allen dedicated over three decades to nurturing young minds as an elementary music teacher in the Houston District and at City View Elementary in Cobb County, GA. His classroom was a place where every child felt seen, heard, and uplifted-Allen's kindness touched countless lives, leaving a legacy of encouragement and hope.
One of Allen's greatest joys was sharing his remarkable voice with the world. He sang with The Atlanta Gay Men's Chorus, Voices of Note, and Our Song, captivating audiences with a voice as pure and uplifting as an angel's. Through music, Allen brought people together, spreading love, acceptance, and joy wherever he performed. Allen's life was enriched by deep family bonds and cherished friendships.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adrian and Janice Burrell, and brothers Mike Burrell and David Burrell. He is survived by his loving husband, Mitch Johnson, a brother, Ricky Askew (Gay), Mother-in-Law Shirley Wilkes. Two aunts, Melba Burrell (Charles), Marel Burrell. Sister-in-law Vicki Thompson (Bill), Brother-in-law Jeff Johnson (Wendy Stanfield). Nieces and nephews, April Burrell Burney (Jeremy), Kaitlyn Atkeison, Chris Burrell. Cousins, Carla Burrell Stanford (Chris), Jason Burrell (Emily), Ken Burrell, and Jennifer King.
To all who loved Allen-family, friends, students, and fellow musicians-may you find comfort in the memories of his gentle spirit, his unwavering kindness, and the music that will forever echo in your hearts. Allen's life reminds us to lift each other up, to sing with joy, and to live with love.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, November 29, 2025, at the North Decatur United Methodist Church in Decatur, GA, from 1:00 – 2:00 pm. A service celebrating Allen's extraordinary life will follow at 2:00pm.
Interment will held at Bulloch Memorial Gardens, Statesboro at a later date.
Let us honor Allen by sharing kindness, embracing our passions, and letting our voices be instruments of hope-just as Allen did every day.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation in Allen's memory be made to his home church, North Decatur United Methodist Church 1523 Church St. Decatur, GA 30030
