Allen Mackler Obituary

Published by Star Tribune on Jan. 7, 2006.
Mackler, Allen age 62, died at home in Osseo, MN, on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005. Allen was the son of Dr. Saul Mackler of Winnetka, IL and the late Suzan R. Mackler. Allen was a person of diverse interests: his first interest was in classical music. Recognizing that his talent at the piano wouldn't be adequate to achieve the goal he envisioned, he became the host of programs at Public Broadcasting Station WETA in Washington, D.C. focusing on the broadcast of rare recordings of classical music. A change of residency to Osseo brought a change of focus to his interests which turned toward 19th century literature. He became deeply involved in Sherlock Holmes and an avid member of associated societies. Allen is survived by his father, sister Sally, and brother Mel.

My Dear Al,

I feel so badly that I did not know of your passing until today. I had waited for you to call me and start back on our therapy sessions. I tried to reach you . . . in so many ways. I will miss talking with you about your books, your bindery projects, and our conversations about dinners with your friends. I will miss trying to find new restaurants for you to try, and your advise on where the best food could be found. I will miss your advise on gourmet cooking, but I will always use your method of cooking a Turkey for Thanksgiving. I will miss your cats, but most of all I will miss the rare moments that we could laugh over your philosophy of life. I am sorry I wasn't there to pay my last respects. May God take care of you.

Your friend . . . Doreen
