Mrs. Alma Nancy Barnes, 93, of Parksley, VA, passed away peacefully at the Shore Health & Rehab on Thursday, November 6, 2025.
Born July 13,1932, in Freeport, Long Island, NY, Nancy was the cherished only child of Clarence Edwin Merritt and Marjorie Elizabeth Merritt. Deeply devoted to her parents, she carried their lessons of love, hard work, and family throughout her life. When Nancy was ten, the family left Long Island for sunny Miami, where she spent her teen years before making one more life-changing move to Chincoteague, VA. It was there that she met the love of her life, Robert Elton Barnes, and just three months later, the two were married in April 1950.
Following the Flood of 1962, Nancy and Robert relocated to Guilford, VA, and they raised their three children, Glenda, Sandra, and Robin. Nancy was a housewife and was also known for her unapologetic sweet tooth. If there was a pie, cake, or ice cream to be found, Nancy was sure to have a helping (or two). Nancy later relocated to Parksley, VA after her children were grown and Robert had passed.
After Robert's passing, she found comfort in her home and joy in her family, friends, and neighbors. Her family finds peace in knowing that she is now free from "Arthur" and reunited with those who went before her.
She is survived by her children, Glenda Lovelady (David) of Winston-Salem, NC, Sandra VanScoy of Bloxom, VA, and Robin Cromwell (Bruce) of Accomac, VA; grandchildren, Bobby Barnes, Holly Hart, Tyler VanScoy, Rachel Lovelady, Natalie Lovelady, Koryn Edmonson, Megan Cromwell, and Nicholas Cromwell; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Edwin Merritt and Marjorie Elizabeth Merritt, and grandson, Michael Robert Lovelady.
A graveside memorial service will be conducted from the John W. Taylor Cemetery in Temperanceville, VA, on Saturday November 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., with Mr. George Fulk officiating.
