Alma was born on the family farm in Harmony Township on June 27, 1926, to Edward and Wilhelmina "Minnie" (Puepke) Schimke. She was baptized in the New Zion Congregational Church and was confirmed at Alpena.

She attended Northwest Harmony and Long Lake rural schools and graduated from Wessington Springs High School in 1944. After graduation, she was employed at the Sioux Falls Air Base in Sioux Falls, SD; the Treasury Department, located at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, IL; and the State ASCS office in Huron, SD.

She married Donovan Shoop on September 15, 1961, in Redwood Falls, MN. They lived on the farm south of Rockham, SD. Alma enjoyed playing the piano and different keyboards. She played the accordion for several years in the Max Hargens Band, along with her two brothers and Donovan. Alma and Donovan played for dances and occasional family reunions.

Alma also enjoyed reading, finding humorous items, watching TV, listening to music, and gardening. She and Donovan enjoyed numerous bus tours together, and she loved all of her cats throughout the years.

She is survived by several nieces: Verneil Knigge of Huron, Eileen Kay (Gaylord) Brandenburg of Alpena, Laurel Lee (Thomas) Hinrichs of Hot Springs, SD, Minette (Dave) Tyler of Sioux Falls, Diane (Jerry) Fastnacht, and Nancy (Mark) Reindl, both of Wessington Springs, Bonnie (Edward) Erickson of Sioux Falls; two nephews: Charles (Mary Lou) Schimke of New Mexico, and Dale (Melissa) Schimke of Wessington Springs; cousins; and two very good friends, Kirk and Chris Sargent.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donovan, in 2011; son Richard John; parents and parents-in-law; brothers: Edwin (Hazel) Schimke and Ben (Cleo) Schimke; and nephews: Terry (Audrey) Schimke and Roger Schimke.
