Alomagene “Jean” Finley Mays, 86, was born July 29, 1939, in Lindsay, California, to Leonard Ford Finley and Vivian Dora Brock.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Beauford Laverne Mays; grandparents/guardians, Pheno and Thelma Brock; parents, Leonard Finley and Vivian Brock; siblings, Gerald Hurley, Floyd Womack, Carolyn Roberts, and Sherrill Ross; and her step-granddaughter, Emily S. Moorefield.
Jean is survived by her children, Debra M. Stephenson (Timothy) and Alton B. Mays (Amanda); siblings, James Hurley and Freddie Gaines of Arizona, and Brenda McNeill of Tennessee; grandchildren, Kaylon Honeycutt (Jessica), Joshua Mays (Brittney), and Allison Holland Dean; step-grandchildren, Christopher Stephenson and Jared Stephenson; and several great-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews she cherished.
Raised on the California coast, Jean graduated from Arroyo Grande High School, met the love of her life, Laverne, an Air Force man, while working in a donut shop. They soon married and later settled in North Carolina, where they owned and operated several restaurants, including the Aberdeen Restaurant, known for Jean’s early-morning home-cooked breakfasts and cafe lunches.
A longtime member of Eagle Springs Baptist Church, Jean was devoted to serving others. Despite a 15-year battle with Alzheimer’s, she remained loving, gracious, and kind. She spent her final years cared for at home by her children, her amazing and loving nurse, Kendra Stewart, and the Amedisys Hospice Team.
Jean will be forever loved and deeply missed, but, joyfully remembered as she’s reunited in Heaven with Jesus, her beloved Laverne, and all those she has longed to see again.
