He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from February 1957 to February 1960 and received an honorable discharge. He later earned an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration from Central Virginia Community College.

A man of deep faith, Alphonso was baptized at Brookville Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. In later years, he attended Tree of Life Church until his health began to decline. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #24 and served multiple terms as Worshipful Master.
