Alphonso Hobbs

Alphonso Hobbs was born December 10, 1945, in Halifax County, NC to the late Naeem Abdullah and the late Mary Virginia Sims Hobbs. Alphonso departed his life peacefully on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Alphonso was educated in the Norfolk City Public School System. He dedicated his life to Christ at an early age and later became a faithful member of Sixth Street Baptist Church in Suffolk, VA, where he served as a member of the choir and played the bass for more than 15 years.

Alphonso lived a life painted with both color and song. For many years, he worked as a painter for various companies, known for his steady hands and pride in every project. Upon retirement, he and his beloved wife, Josephine, built Hobbs Home Improvement, a business rooted in love, hard work, and trust.

Beyond his career, music was the heartbeat of Alphonso's life. He was rarely seen without an instrument nearby-guitars, keyboards, and more found a home in his collection, each one a vessel for his joy. A gifted singer and musician, Alphonso lent his voice and talents to many bands throughout the years, filling dance halls, churches, and gatherings with the rhythm of his soul. Whether leading with song or blending into harmony, he had a way of making music not just something to hear, but something to feel.

Alphonso leaves to cherish his memories, his devoted wife of 32 years, Josephine Hobbs of the home; one daughter, Julia Snowden of Norfolk, VA; three sons, Naeem Cuffee and Brehon Hudgins of Norfolk, VA, and Alphonso Cuffee (Shauna) of Wendell, NC; two stepsons, Don Lee Pugh and Furlinzie Pugh; four sisters, Delva Green (Leander), Gloria White, Qwenesta White of Norfolk, VA and Mary Boyce (James) of Syracuse, NY; three brothers, Keith White (Vernetta) of Atlanta, GA, Kelvin White of Norfolk, VA, and Charles Gregory White (Kelly) of Chesapeake, VA; twelve grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
