Alta Mae Bonar Marksberry June 24, 1939 - October 26, 2025
All of us like to say their loved one was special. To the Bonar and Marksberry families, Alta Bonar Marksberry was that special person, not only to her families; but to everyone who knew her, for friends, her neighbors, her co-workers, her church members, and many others. There are so many reasons we say she was special, this obituary would not hvae sufficient space to name them. Alta was one of a kind and such a remarkable person. She spent most of her life in the communities of Pleasent Hill, Butler., and Demossville, Kentucky. She was a member of the Knoxville Christian Church and attended services until just recently.
She played baseball when young. She retired from the Country Cousin Bakery with 25 years of service. She worked at several bakeries and made numerous wedding cakes, her specialty. Always willing to help, she volunteered her expertise in helping establish the Miss Shirley Bakery in Alexandria, Kentucky.
Alta loved quilting, and made so many quilts she probably should have won medals because every one of her quilts was beautiful. At her death she had a collection of 354 beautiful quilts, all numbered, and probably noted where they go. That does not include all the quilts made and given away for any occasion. It is hard for most people to even think up the names of that many quilts, let alone produce them. Alta belonged to several quilting clubs. They called her the "Energizer Bunny." In addition to quilting, every summer she baked mini breads of all flavors and gave them to everyone as well as jellies and jams. There was always a treat coming when you were not expecting it when Alta came visiting. It was in her character to put everyone else above her own needs. She was always such a happy person. Yet, she had her share of sorrows. She had an adorable little laugh and seldom ever felt sorry for herself-truly, a rare trait.
Alta, age 86, was born the daughter of Charles Robert and Lelia Earls Bonar. In her passing, Alta is survived by one grandson, Timothy Dempsey; one sister, Pat LaFollette; and one sister-in-law, Wilma (Alvin) Bonar. She is also survived by one special step-daughter Kim (John) Patrick. Preceding her in death was husband Kenneth Marksberry and daughter Debbie Sampson Dempsey. Also preceding her in death were brothers Ronald, Donald, Alvin Bonar, and sister Ruth Ray. She leaves numerous nieces and nephews and a special young neighborhood boy, Brandon Mason.
