Alta Gladene Woodside-Swires, formally known to everyone as “GG” of Canadian stepped into the arms of Jesus Monday, October 14, in Canadian.

Memorial services will be at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at the Canadian Church of Christ with Barry Hobson, Pastor, officiating. Cremation and arrangements are under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors.

GG was born March 9,1947 in Canyon, Texas to Glen Thomas Cox and Joy McDowell. She graduated from Happy High School in 1965 and attended College of Amarillo Republic, studying computer processing. In 1965, she married David Mack “Woody” Woodside in Tulia Texas. He proceeded her in death in 1987. The Canadian area has been GG’s home for the last 47 years. She married Stanley Swires in 1999, who proceeded her in death in 2016. She served as the Hemphill County Tax Assessor for 17 years, then worked at the Hemphill County Appraisal District for 16 years. GG loved her community and served it well. She was a hard worker, proving it by being on the Canadian Volunteer Fire Department where she was a firefighter for 16 years. She was honored as Firefighter of the Year in 2011. In her spare time, GG served as a 4-H leader for several years as well as delivering Meals on Wheels. She was a longtime member of the Canadian Church of Christ. GG enjoyed time with her family and hosting family meals. Her hobbies included gardening, sewing and painting. GG loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren more than anything in the world. GG was a joyous, giving soul who always had a positive attitude and a smile to share.

GG was also proceeded in death by her parents, Glen and Joy Cox and a sister, Lillie Heart.

Those left to remember and celebrate GG’s life are her son, Glen Woodside; Amy Woodside Carter of Canadian; granddaughter, Macy Baker and husband Blayne of Spearman; grandson, Marcus Woodside and wife Mindy of Canadian; two stepdaughters, Jaelynn Swires of Canadian and Carma Raper of Canadian; a stepson, Pat Swires of Canyon; a sister, Sherma Flowers of Happy; and great grandchildren Graham, Witten, Lee and Maggie.

Memorials may be made to Hemphill County Hospice, 1020 S. 4th St., Canadian, TX 79014 and Canadian Volunteer Fire Department, 5 Main St., Canadian, TX 79014.
