He served as a Deacon at New Zion M.B. Church in Buffalo, NY. After accepting his call to the ministry, he served as an associate minister at New Zion, as well as Mt. Mariah B.C. (Frierson/Kingston, LA.) and Nazarene B.C. (Donaldsonville, LA.).
Having been born on a farm, he became a lover of nature and spent most of his spare time taking care of his garden and orchard. Through his other talents, you may also find some of his ceramic artwork in the homes of family members and other Buffalonians.
He was a graduate of Second Ward High School and Grambling State University where he met and married his wife Brenda of 54 years.
He is survived by

Son Marwan Stanford (Allison) of Palm Harbor, FL
Daughter: Dr. Lateefah Stanford (Naperville, IL)
Granddaughter: (Harmoni)
One godchild, seven siblings, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

My sincere condolences to Brenda, Marwan, Lateefa, and Harmony. I will cherish memories of Alton. Alton was three years older than I, but we did a lot of things together as children. Some of those things are not so pleasant, such as picking cotton and cutting pulpwood. I certainly remember transporting items for the establishment of the orchard and gardens in Gloster. He showed his appreciation by allowing me to harvest produce. I don't think Jewel allowed many others the privileges I enjoyed. I will miss him dearly.
