Alvin Achterhof Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 14, 2025.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alvin J. Achterhof, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who left us peacefully on December 7, 2025, in Kingman, Arizona, at the age of 91. Born on November 29, 1934, in Grand Haven, Michigan, Alvin lived a life rich in love, hard work, and dedication to his family and community. Alvin was the cherished son of Jacob and Henrietta Achterhof, who instilled in him the values of kindness, humility, and a strong work ethic. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, as well as his brothers Harold, Kenneth, and Jacob, and his sisters Jean and Katheryn (Kitty). Their memories were always close to his heart.

On October 31, 1952, Alvin married the love of his life, Effie Bishop. Their union lasted an extraordinary 73 years, filled with unwavering love and support for one another. Together, they raised three wonderful children: Deborah Buchanan, Randal Achterhof, and Laurie Sanchez. Alvin's legacy lives on through his six grandchildren-Alvin, Jerome, Robin, Esther, Elizabeth, and Christopher-and his eleven great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy and pride.

Alvin was a man of many talents, a true master of his craft. As a machinist by trade he specialized in tool and die making but he was also a jack-of-all-trades, capable of tackling any task that came his way. From plumbing and electrical work to woodworking, there was no challenge too great for him. Over the years, he lent his skills to several companies, including Michigan Brass Company and Stretch Forming Corp. In 1970, Alvin and Effie bravely took over the family business, the Achterhof Variety Store, in Muskegon, Michigan. They ran the store successfully for over 14 years.

Over the years Al and Effie have lived in Michigan, California and Arizona. In his later years, Alvin and Effie moved to Kingman, Arizona, where they enjoyed their time together and created even more cherished memories.

A private funeral service will be held in Kingman, Arizona. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his spirit and generosity will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
