Alvino Ramirez Mendez, of Odessa, Texas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2025, at the age of 77.

He was preceded in death by his father, Patricio A. Mendez; his mother, Alcaria Ramirez Mendez; his sisters, Lucia Mendez Ortiz and Anita Mendez; and his brothers, Ambrosio, Santiago, and Nolberto Mendez.

Alvino was born on March 31, 1948, in Monahans, Texas. He proudly served his country in the Vietnam War as a Door Gunner in the U.S. Army. His courage, strength, and dedication to duty reflected the same character he carried throughout his entire life.

Known by many as “Al,” he found joy in life’s simple pleasures — cheering for his Yankees, Cowboys, and Longhorns, sharing stories from his younger days, and spending time surrounded by the people he loved most. A devoted Catholic man, his faith guided him through life’s blessings and challenges, giving him strength, patience, and peace.

Alvino is survived by his loving wife, Delia Mendez of Odessa, Texas, with whom he built a home filled with love, laughter, and family. He is also survived by his children: Tammy Ramos of Odessa; Veronica Galindo of Odessa; Kimberly and Gabriel McClelland of Midland; Allen and Jenn Mendez of Midland; and Albert and Melissa Mendez of Odessa.

He is also survived by his siblings: Felipa Mendez Sotelo (Oscar) of Dallas; Rosa Mendez Oyerbides (Federico) of Monahans; Esther Mendez Gonzalez (Francisco) of Natalia; Rodolfo Mendez (Maria) of San Antonio; and Oscar Mendez of Monahans.

Alvino’s pride and joy were his grandchildren — Evonnie Ramos, Dallan Galindo, Dorian and Taylor Ramos, Chloe Robledo, Gavin McClelland, Blake McBride, Charli and Codi Mendez, Mariah and Mercedes Mendez — and his great-grandson, Jozia Diaz. His love for them was endless, and his spirit will continue to live on in their hearts.

We will remember Alvino for his warm smile, his quick wit, his big heart, and his unwavering love for his family. Though we will miss him deeply, we find comfort in knowing he is at peace and reunited with those who went before him.

A heartfelt thank you to Wilson and Young, Medal of Honor VA Clinics, Dr. Awisomo and Pack 4; to Kendra Jones, the entire community care team, and all of his VA doctors; to Odessa Medical Center, Dr. Gibbons, and the Complete Care team; and to Live Well Home Health Hospice and his devoted caregiver Maria. Your care and support have meant the world to us.

A viewing for our beloved dad, Alvino, will be held at Nichols Funeral Home on Wednesday, beginning at 9:00 AM. The Rosary will be prayed that evening at 7:00 PM. Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday at the Nichols Funeral Home Chapel. We will lay him to rest at Crane Cemetery following the services.

Pallbearers will be Dallan Galindo, Gavin McClelland, Gabriel Tarin, Sergio Mireles, Dorian Ramos, Matthew Pinon, and honorary bearers will be Blake McBride and Jaxon MacGregor.

The Mendez family sincerely thanks everyone for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers they have received during this difficult time.

May his beautiful soul rest in eternal peace. He will be forever loved and deeply missed.
