Amos Cecchi Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home - Newport on Sep. 8, 2025.
Amos F. Cecchi, 98 of Newport passed away on September 3, 2025 after a long and full life.

Born in Prato, Italy on March 18, 1927, he competed in many sports as a young man, including several runs of the legendary Mille Miglia car race. After completing his education at Collegio Cicognini, he embarked on a career in the textile industry, establishing a successful brokerage firm in Prato and later in Princeton, NJ. His work brought him to New York City, where in 1960 he wed Margaret "Peggy" Dennis in St. Patrick's Cathedral. The couple returned to Italy and raised their two children in Prato until relocating to Princeton, NJ in 1975, at which time he became a US citizen.

Upon retirement in 1996 they moved permanently to Newport. An avid hiker in his youth, Amos continued to enjoy brisk daily walks around Newport until two years ago. Amos was a member of the Club Mille Miglia of Brescia, Italy, The Nassau Club of Princeton and the Newport Reading Room, as well as a parishioner of St. Mary's Church.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret of Newport, daughter Suzanne Kelly and her husband Martin of Newport, son Victor Cecchi and his wife Sheila of Duxbury, MA, and his beloved grandson Christopher Cecchi. Predeceased by his sisters Annamaria and Grazia, he also leaves extended family in Italy.

Service and interment are private.

I remember uncle " Pisse" a racer in both "Coppa Consuma" and "Mille Miglia" in Italy with "Lucertola" piloting a Fiat 1100 "truccata" (meaning prepared for race). This is before he married and moved to the "States". He used to sell my father who married Sofia Amos's sister tons of rags for the recycling textile industry of Prato. Shapiro & Sons were suppliers of institution used clothing that we would strip apart and reuse. As a child I recall working at my farther's place and while stripping the clothing we would find stuff in the pocket, coins and chewing-gum. Much to our surprise a worker named Nesi found a diamond in a shoulder pad quite valuable. We had to strip linings and pads before the process.
