Our hearts are heavy as we bid farewell to Amrit Chandra Malhi, who passed away on May 5, 2023. Mr. Malhi was a generous and caring man who had been battling slowly worsening dementia in the past year.
Born in Nadi, Fiji, Mr. Malhi's father had wanted him to become a physician, but Mr. Malhi followed his heart and decided to pursue his passion for art and travel. In 1961, he embarked on a journey that would take him across the world. He traveled on a ship for five weeks and took several trains before arriving in England. Along the way, he saw much of the world, which led to a dislike of pasta - a food he had grown tired of during his travels. The only places he wished to visit but did not get a chance were Trinidad and the Galapagos Islands.
Mr. Malhi formed a lifelong bond with his beloved wife Prabha, whom he adored as the love of his life. They traveled extensively together, enjoying cruises with close family, trips to Alaska, the Panama Canal twice, the Caribbean, and several visits to Fiji and Hawaii, especially Oahu. They visited India four times, spending three months seeing two-thirds of the country in 2008-2009. Mr. Malhi's travels deepened his appreciation for different cultures and the beauty of the world.
Mr. Malhi was a man of many trades, dedicating most of his professional life to Gillette/PaperMate engineering pens. The children of the family got to feel the perks when he would bring home fancy pens, pencils, and razors.
In his later years, Mr. Malhi resided in Bountiful, Utah, where he spent his time caring for his beautiful vegetable garden. He was always proud to pack up fresh veggies for family members and neighbors to take home. His garden was a source of joy and pride, and it brought a smile to his face whenever he shared the fruits of his labor.
Other hobbies included reading classics like Charles Dickens and Shakespeare or Time magazine, National Geographic, collecting stamps, watching the news, watching Indian black and white movies, listening to classical ghazals, and eating his wife's delicious cooking.
Mr. Malhi will be remembered for his kind (and often direct nature), his love of family, and his adventurous spirit. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, and all who knew him. We are grateful for the memories he leaves behind and will carry his spirit with us always.
