Andrew Brown Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 6, 2022.
Andrew Marion "Pete" Brown of Gadsden, Alabama passed away Saturday, September 3, 2022, with his beloved wife of 37 years, Joan Brown, by his side. He had recently celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends. Pete was born in Columbus, Georgia and grew up in Guntersville, Alabama where he attended Marshall County High School. He was a cum laude graduate of Baylor University and went on to serve in the United States Army from 1954 - 1957. After the service, Pete completed medical training at the Medical College of Alabama and residency program at Washington University, studying under the renowned Dr. Joseph Ogura. With his Specialty in Otolaryngology and Allergy, he first began his practice in Birmingham, Alabama and then onto Gadsden, for the bulk of his career from 1970 until his retirement at the age of 88 in 2020. Pete loved being a doctor and was passionate about the ENT and allergy program and the difference it made to so many.
In addition to his practice, Pete dedicated much of his time to his community, serving as a member and past president to organizations such as Gadsden Rotary Club, Etowah County Medical Society, the Gadsden Beautification Board, and Chief of Staff at Riverview Medical Center. He supported the Boy Scouts of America, as the past Vice President of the Choccolocco Council and later given the Distinguished Citizen Award in 2008 from the Greater Alabama Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
While his family is proud of his many achievements, he is most remembered for his love of Christ, his wife and family, his devotion to his church, and his fervor for Alabama football. Much of his later years Pete took great joy and interest in preparing and teaching his Sunday school class at 12th Street Baptist Church, painting pictures of nature and his grandchildren and connecting with his friends and relatives.
Pete was preceded in death by his mother, Arizona "Zona" Embrey Brown, his father, Leonard Brown, and grandson, Henry "Hal" Culp. He is survived by his children, Sarah Brown Hughes, Frank Inzer Brown, Darel Walker and Daron Walker. Sarah's husband, Allan, and children, Elizabeth and Emily. Frank's wife, Jane, and children Franklin and Drew Brown, David Culp (wife, Brooklyn) and Rachel Culp Moorman (husband, Claude, "C.T."), Darel's wife Amy and daughter Jordan, and Daren's wife Jamie and children Mikaila and Garrett Walker.
Many thanks go to family and friends who have provided prayers, love and support through recent medical challenges. A special thanks goes to the Riverview medical team, ProHealth/Home Health and Hospice which provided great care and kindness. We know Pete is at peace and has gone home to his Heavenly Father.
The service will be held at Collier Butler Funeral home at 2:00 p.m. this Friday with the Reverend Charles Taylor officiating the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Big Oak Ranch or 12th Street Baptist Church.

Pete was a special person for me, partly because he was the last living relative to have known my father in his childhood, but mostly because of the person that he was. I didn't spend as much time with him as I would have liked, but I cherish the moments we did have. Rest in peace with Christ, Pete.

Dr. Brown was our family physician and treated several of our family members when I was growing up in Alabama during the 1970s. He was a friend as well as our physician. I would like to extend our deepest condolences to his wife Joan and his family during this difficult time.
