Williamsburg-Andrew Glenn Brummel was born December 29, 1938, in Hull, Iowa, the son of Albert and Gertrude (Dykstra) Brummel. Andy graduated from Western Christian High School in Hull, IA in 1956, then completed programs at Dordt College, A.I.B. and Central College where he earned a BA in Education. He later earned a MA in Library Science at Western Michigan University. Between his schooling, Andy served in the Marine Corps from 1957-1961. Andy was united in marriage to Marilyn Elaine Jansen on June 8, 1962 at the Christian Reformed Church in Sully. Andy began teaching in Pella, then Los Alamos, NM for a few years, before accepting a position in North English as the English Valleys High School Media Specialist from 1977 to 1998. Andy dedicated many hours to the East Central UniServ Unit of Iowa State Education Association ensuring teachers were fairly represented in contract negotiations. He loved being the teacher that didn’t give homework and was always willing to lend a sympathetic ear.
Throughout his life, with the help of Marilyn and their children, Andy planted thousands of trees for the birds and wildlife to enjoy. He couldn’t pass a stray acorn or walnut that he didn’t think should be planted. Andy was also an avid gardener, and spoiler of his dogs, especially Milo. In retirement, Andy dedicated hundreds of hours to learning how to weave, exercising his creativity on the loom to make things for friends and family. He also enjoyed working with the students at the University of Iowa as head valet at the University Hospitals. Andy spent ten years of retirement living in rural Allamakee County, Iowa where he could enjoy hosting his twin grandsons for summer adventures at Yellow River State Park and Pike’s Peak State Park.
Andy passed away on Monday, February 28, 2022 at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg at the age of 83 years.
He is survived by his wife, Marilyn, of Williamsburg, IA; sons, Gregg (Sara) of Altoona, IA, Ron (Rhonda) of Albemarle, NC, Patrick (Gina) of Williamsburg, IA; and daughter, Shelby (David) of Cedar Rapids, IA; and eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Andy was preceded in death by his parents, and granddaughter Susan.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be 11:00 am on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at the First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg. Visitation will be 9:30 am until service time at the church.
Andy’s body was donated to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, fulfilling a lifelong passion for education.
