Remembering Mr. Andrew Bryson...
To me he was a "GREAT MAN '' strong gentleman, caring, knowledgeable, always willing to help anyone to better their life or education. I meant him at NAVFACSOUTHWESTDIV Command in 1990, where his office was down the hallway from my working area. Meant his wife Mrs. Betty, and Kiefer later, where we all became close with each other, helping in ways that were needed. Visiting her for her birthday in April for many years.
He always had a positive conversation to share with me. And you better have had enough time on your schedule when you were going to talk with him. Because it was never a short conversation once he started talking with you. But I loved hearing his stories etc. Supported me through some very difficult times in my life and supported my children also. Helped my daughter Dasha in 1995 to become an asbestos analyst. Where she graduated in honors and worked for CT&E Environmental. Also, conducted Monica and Michael Jr., in their careers also...... He was AWESOME.
Guiding me into getting my degree at UOP. Made me study in his office daily to complete my degree. Where I graduated in August 2001 with a dual degree.... Also developing my children in making wise decisions for their future. I thank GOD for bringing him into my life. I loved him dearly.
He was my dad here in San Diego, who always had a listening ear. I will miss going to see him on or around his birthday in September. I am so sorry that I am not there to celebrate his home going, but God knows that my heart is hurting now. Very thankful that he is not suffering anymore.
Rest in Peace (DAD) Mr. Bryson,
Your other daughter

I offer my deepest condolences to the entire Bryson family. I never met Mr. Bryson, but now have through his sister-in-law Delores.
His obit, is a remarkable auto-biography that will be sharing with a brother, former military, who holds a Doctorate in African American Studies and authored books on same. If there paths didn't cross in life, they will now.
It is an honor to learn of Mr. Bryson's life , accomplishments and love his sense of humor!
Thank you and deepest sympathies.

My uncle just let me know he passed. Andrew was my grandpa's nephew. My grandpa died before I was born and I didn't know Andrew but really needed to read his story. I'm a librarian in need of some encouragement and I think this just gave it to me. I hope to do him proud.

This was an absolutely beautiful obituary. I can see how his life experiences shaped the person his wonderful daughter Donna, my friend, developed into. I send my sincerest condolences to the whole family.

My sincere condolences to the Bryson family. I moved to San Diego in 1994, and heard so many great IH stories about the legendary Andy Bryson. I finally met him at a local AIHA meeting. He was as brilliant as I had heard, yet a humble man, I learned something new every time I had the chance to talk with him.

One of my first memories I have of Andy was meeting him while stationed at the Navy Environmental Health Center, located in Cincinnati, Ohio. I was a LTjg, sitting at my desk, probably with a set of Mickey Mouse ears on my head, when this big guy past by my office, along with several other attendees of a meeting being held there. He stood out (for me) because there were so few Afro-Americans working as Industrial Hygienist......and, to that date, he and I were the only ones working for the Navy.
We only talked briefly during our first meeting, but I would see him and forge a bond as the years progressed. I often sought his advice on matters of industrial hygiene strategies, and listened with amusement as he related some of the many stories he readily offered.
Andy and Betty were surrogate family. I was so lucky to be openly welcomed by them when I landed in San Diego, and there friendship carried me through the many occasions we shared during the subsequent years.
