Andrew Loomis Obituary

LOOMIS, Andrew "Gregg"

Andrew "Gregg" Loomis died on July 25, 2025. He was born March 8,1938, in Atlanta, Georgia. He and his beloved sister, Louise, grew up in Ansley Park, with their maternal grandparents, Anise Hawkins Kenan and Thomas Stephen Kenan. He attended Spring Street Elementary School and Woodberry Forest School, before graduating from Emory University and Emory School of Law, where he graduated second in his class.

He began his legal career with the former firm Powell, Goldstein, Frazier & Murphy, and practiced law in Atlanta for many years. He combined his legal career with a career in commercial real estate investment with holdings in urban retail centers and apartment complexes.

A maverick not content to limit himself to traditional pursuits, Gregg competed as a professional sports car driver from 1967 to 1974, completing 29 races in the United States and internationally, even racing against Mario Andretti at Daytona. Driving Porsche 911s and 906s, he finished first or second place in many races, including winning First In Class in the 1970 - 24 Hours of Daytona.

He flew his own airplane, which he enjoyed piloting to his homes in the Caribbean, where he spent time sport fishing and scuba diving.

A Renaissance man, Gregg was also a published author, writing articles for, among other publications, Flying Magazine and Scuba Diving Magazine. He was a prolific fiction writer, known for his Lang Reilly series and thrillers, including "Voodoo Fury", "The Pegasus Secret", "The Sinai Secret, Gates of Hades", and "Hot Ice". His novels were published in several languages, and he had over a half million copies in print.

Gregg will be remembered for his wicked sense of humor, his gift for telling wonderful stories – often about his own adventures – and his many and varied interests, ranging from his love of history and travel to entertaining with his hallmark martini in hand.

He is survived by his adored wife of over 40 years, Suzanne Erb Loomis; and his three children, Kenan G. Loomis (Lisa), M. Graham Loomis (Kathy), and Laura Loomis Sherman (George). He is also survived by his five grandchildren, Kenan R. Loomis (Tess), Ashley Sherman (Tyler Diehl), Coles Loomis, Evan Sherman and Hartley Loomis; one great-grandson; his siblings, Cynthia Lister and Hugh Loomis; and his faithful companion Henry, a 115 pound English Cream Retriever. He was predeceased by his sister, Louise, who perished in the Air France Orly plane crash; and his brother, Frank Loomis.

During his lifetime, Gregg was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church, The Piedmont Driving Club, Capital City Club, the Atlanta Bar Association, the American Bar Association and the Atlanta Writers Club.

Arrangements for funeral services will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the American Kidney Foundation.

Gregg was like a character in a James Bond film. The kind flying through Rome on a motorcycle. He truly had a lust for life. I'll never forget some conversations we had. If they question him at the Pearly Gates, he'll definitely talk his way in..
