Andrew John Gumbita, Jr., 92, of Wheeling, WV, passed away Friday, March 1, 2024 at Liza's Place, Wheeling, WV.
He was born April 17, 1931, in Central City, PA, son of the late Andrew John and Mary Sciranko Gumbita, Sr.
Andy was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and retired as a Teacher from Ohio County Schools. He was a Baptist by faith.
Andy's zest for life was evident in his numerous hobbies and interests. A marathon runner, an avid fisherman, hunter, and woodworker, he found solace and joy in the great outdoors. An enthusiastic supporter of local sports teams, Andy's love for the camaraderie and spirit of the game was infectious.
Known for his generous spirit, Andy never met a stranger. He had the rare ability to connect with anyone he met, leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him. His legacy of kindness, mentorship, and community involvement will continue to inspire all who knew him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, Steve Gumbita; sister, Verna Ference; and brother-in-law, George Ference.
Andy is survived by his wife, Mary Darlene Davis Gumbita; daughter, Valerie (C. Kent) May of Pittsburgh, PA; brother, David (Judie) Gumbita of Springfield, VA; three grandsons, Andrew John (Lora) Harrell, James Davis (Chelsea) May & Grant May; four great-grandchildren, Zoe, twins Ally & Thomas, and Addie; sister-in-law, Marge Gumbita; and several nieces & nephews.
Friends will be received for visitation on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM at Kepner Funeral Homes, 166 Kruger Street, Wheeling, WV (304-242-2311). Services & interment will be held at the convenience of the family at The National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
