Andrew L. Heard, 89, of Sheboygan, WI passed away at his home on Friday, July 4, 2025. He was born on June 22, 1936 to the late Howard and Edrene (Hosey) Heard in Laurel, Mississippi.

Andrew is survived by his partner Lynne Borrell, daughter Holly (Keith) Heard Hinderlie; step-son Jerrod (Misti) Borrell, grandsons, Adrian and Jaden and granddaughters Alexis and Loralei; He is preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Albert and Jerrell Heard.

After graduating from Hyde Park High School, Andrew attended the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana where he earned a Bachelor’s of Arts in Architecture. During his college years he was an active member of the NAACP where his passion for the Civil Rights Movement was fomented. After college he pursued his activism through his involvement with Operation PUSH where he helped organize transportation for Chicagoans attending the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom in 1963. Andrew founded Heard and Associates, a Chicago-based architectural firm, in 1967. Over a span of forty years Andrew’s firm provided architectural design for city, county, state and privately funded projects. Andrew was most proud of his design of the Cook County Morgue which was subsequently featured in an issue of Architectural Digest magazine. His design of the Westside Technical School and the Gwendolyn Brooks Library at Chicago State University were also among his most celebrated projects. Andrew was committed to the local and national architectural community. As a founding member of the National Organization of Minority Architects he served as President in 1978. He also served on the Commission on Chicago Landmarks in the 1990’s. Over the years, Andrew received many recognitions and awards for his architectural designs and contributions to the architectural community.

Andrew believed in breaking boundaries and testing limits in career as well as in his personal life. As a young man he enjoyed taking weekend pilot lessons at Meigs Field Airport. Later in life he enjoyed travelling to Europe and he spent many weekends racing at Road America in Plymouth, WI as an enthusiastic member of the Porsche Club.

A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date, announcement to follow.
