"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." -2 Timothy 4:7
With a heart full of faith and a life lived in devotion to God, Andrew Robert Holum passed away on July 12, 2025, in Kingwood, Texas, at the age of 93, following complications from a car accident that occurred 3 months ago.
Born on August 6, 1931, in Madison, Wisconsin, Andy spent his growing up years between Mt. Horeb Wisconsin and Dunube Minnesota developing his lifelong interest in cars and nurturing his creative spirit of drawing, music and writing. He graduated top of his class from Danube High School in 1949. He attended St. Olaf College in Minnesota, where he played football, sang in the choir, and served as a cartoonist and editor for the yearbook and school newspaper. Andy contributed to every school newspaper and yearbook from elementary school all the way to graduate school. He really enjoyed this activity.
Andy served his country from 1952 to 1955 in the U.S. Army 33rd Infantry during the Korean War. He was stationed in the Panama Canal Zone. After being honorably discharged, he returned to Wisconsin and earned a master's degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
On July 11, 1964, he married Mary Ellen Kincaide at Fox Point Lutheran Church, beginning a journey of partnership, love, and devotion.
Andy enjoyed a long and meaningful career in advertising, where he worked as a senior copywriter, account executive, and editor. He was respected for his calm demeanor, work ethic, and unwavering integrity.
Known affectionately as "Ol' Eagle Eyes," he had a remarkable gift for spotting even the smallest grammatical errors-earning him the role of the family's trusted proofreader. He once said"Some of the happiest days of my working life were the 3 years spent in the Harley-Davidson advertising department when it was a family-owed company. The blat of a V-twin exhaust is still music to my ears." Above all, Andy was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He found his greatest joy in his family, always placing their needs above his own. His kindness, patience, and quiet wisdom left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Andy is survived by his son, Jared Holum, and his wife Julie of Lake Oswego, Oregon; his daughter, Melinda Tomasaitis (Odom), and her husband Michael Tomasaitis of Kingwood, Texas; and his beloved grandchildren: Jack, Nick, and Cole Holum of Lake Oswego, and Ella Odom of Kingwood.
A dedicated member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Cypress for over 40 years, Andy was deeply committed to serving others. He volunteered at local food banks and supported more than 30 charities annually, living out his faith through quiet acts of service and compassion.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, humility, and unwavering faith-a life that will continue to inspire all who knew him.
A celebration of Andrew's life will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church in Cypress, Texas on August 9th, 2025 at 10:30am. A reception will follow the service and Andrew Holum will be buried at Houston National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to organizations close to Andy's heart: Houston Food Bank, Messiah Lutheran Church or Frassatti Catholic High School, where his granddaughter Ella attends.
