Obituary published on Legacy.com by Beck Funeral Home in Austin/Round Rock on Feb. 25, 2024.
Andy passed in his sleep early Thursday February 22, 2024, from natural causes. He lived a full life and will be missed greatly by his family, friends, coworkers, and all that were fortunate to have met him.
Andrew L. Meyer was born in Lake Charles Louisiana. He attended Lake Charles High School and graduated from Landry Memorial. At an early age, he was fascinated by aircraft and gained a keen interest in aviation. As a young man in Lake Charles, he managed to hop a ride in an open cockpit biplane trainer and the natural sequence of events found Andy entering the Airforce in July 1949. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant and began his pilot career. He flew aircraft such as the T-6 advanced trainer, B-25 twin engine bomber, the B-17 bomber, the RB-29 and the RB-50. His tour of duty was with the 55TH Strategic Reconnaissance Wing stationed out of Barksdale Airforce base near Shreveport Louisiana. It was at this station that Andy met is wife, of 73 years, Marjorie Montgomery. Andy and Marjorie were married in January of 1951. Tour of duty took Andy to different hemispheres of the globe. He was stationed in Louisiana, Kansas, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Alaska, Japan, England, and Germany. After several years of service, Andy separated from the Airforce and began family life, initially in Lake Charles and then moved to Shreveport and finally to Austin Texas.
Andy and Marjorie settled in Austin and raised a family of three boys and one girl. As a father and husband, he was a disciplined provider, loving companion and good buddy. He and the family enjoyed outdoor activities such as camping, boating, fishing, hunting and of course attending the local airshows. He was a "Longhorn" fan and followed the "Cowboys". He coached his boys in little league baseball and attended their track meets and football games as well. Andy maintained a large collection of aviation history books and spent countless hours building aircraft models with his boys and explain the physics of flight.
Andy's professional career saw him work for 38 years at Graybar Electrical, a nationally known top tier electrical solutions and component supply company. During his career with Graybar, he worked in both sales and warehouse supply. Coworkers remember him as a terrific leader in the office as he spent countless hours helping the newer employees with product knowledge and patiently explaining the proper ways to handle business. He was a great mentor and a great friend.
Andy was an Airforce and aviation historian. He sought out and found other Airforce pilots and related associations around the country. He became a goodfellow of the "Quiet Birdmen" and a member of the "Order of Daedalians". He and Marjorie would travel to various cities and towns within Texas and around the U.S. to participate in Airforce pilot reunions. Andy was known as one of the communicators that kept the ties between the retired airmen.
Andy is survived by his wife Marjorie, his sons Kirk, Karl, Steven, and daughter Kathy. He has several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His sister Florence lives in Lake Charles and has many children and grand kids, and all have been part of Andy's wonderful life.
