Andrew David Tournas, age 94, passed away peacefully at home on July 28, 2025, in South Yarmouth, MA. Andrew's legacy of kindness, humility, and integrity lives on in the hearts of his children and grandchildren.
Born on November 17, 1930, in New Bedford, MA, Andrew was the son of George and Lillian (Riley) Tournas. In 1939 his family moved to Providence, R.I. where he attended Hope High School. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island and proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War.
Upon his honorable discharge, Andrew returned to school and earned a master's degree in Education from Bridgewater State University. His passion for learning and his deep commitment to children led him to a distinguished 37-year career as an elementary school principal in Smithfield, Rhode Island. Andrew was a beloved leader and mentor-respected for his fairness, calm demeanor, and unwavering dedication to students, staff, and families.
During the summers, Andrew could be found on Cape Cod, where he bartended at the Silver Lounge in North Falmouth for 53 years. It was there his bachelor days ended when he met Sally Baxter. Andrew and Sally were married in 1975 in Falmouth, MA and shortly after welcomed 2 cherished daughters, Marie and Laura. He would often say that when he met Sally, "his world turned pink." They went on to share 50 years of marriage.
Andrew was also a gifted singer and longtime member of the Narragansett Bay Chorus. He traveled the country with the chorus, competing and sharing music with audiences nationwide.
He will be remembered not only for his devotion to education but also for his charming and beloved presence behind the bar. A true gentleman and devoted family man, Andrew found joy in life's simple pleasures-especially time spent with his girls and grandchildren.
He is survived by his devoted wife Sally (Baxter) Tournas; his children Marie Tournas Feehan and her husband Michael of Falmouth, and Laura Tournas of Cataumet. He was the proud ¨Grampy Choo-Choo¨ of 3 grandchildren: Baxter and Andi Feehan, and Teddy Partridge. He is also survived by his brother, George Tournas and his wife Martha and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Lillian Comstock and Pauline Finegan.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, August 3rd from 2-4 p.m. at Chapman Funeral Home, 584 West Falmouth Highway, West Falmouth MA. A Funeral Service with words of remembrance will take place on Monday, August 4th at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at the Cataumet Cemetery.
