Angela (Angie) Colaluca, 87, passed peacefully in the morning on Sunday the 2nd of March 2025 with her family members by her side at the Stuart Meyer Hospice House in Palm Coast, Florida. She was the most amazing and beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend. She loved her family dearly.
Angie was born to Antonia & Antonio Lagana on September 10, 1937 in the town of Scilla part of the metropolitan city of Reggio Calabria in the region of Calabria, Italy. Scilla is a small fishing town in southern Italy at the "toe of the boot". Angie's childhood in Italy was difficult during World War II as enemy troops forced her family from their home and they had to take cover in a farmhouse on a vineyard. Her father Antonio became a US citizen prior to the war and traveled between NY where he worked and Italy to support his family. When the war was over, he immigrated the family on a banana boat through Ellis Island to Port Chester, New York when Angie was 10 years old in 1947.
In her early years, Angie went to Holy Rosary Catholic grade school in the second grade as a 10 year old because she couldn't speak English. She worked very hard to learn English and eventually skipped ahead grades while attending Portchester High School where she graduated in June of 1957 at the age of 19. When she graduated, she took a full time job with New York Telephone Company in Rye, NY as a telephone operator.
On the 17th of September 1961 she married Anthony (Tony) Colaluca the son of Donata Colarossi Colaluca Cantalupo & Alfonso (Alfred) Colaluca in Port Chester, NY. In 1967 they relocated their family to Yorktown Heights, NY until they retired and moved to Palm Coast, FL in 1991.
She was predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, her parents, sister Mary Lagana, brother Sam Lagana, brother-in-law Fred Lagana, brother-in-law Louis (Gigi) Giorgi, sister-in-law Louise Messina, and brother-in-law Phil Messina.
She is survived by her daughter Angela Fitzgerald, son-in-law Donald Fitzgerald; her daughter Mary Rufrano, son-in-law Eric Rufrano, grandsons Eric Rufrano Jr. and Brandon Rufrano, granddaughter-in-law Ceni Rufrano, great grandson Santiago Rufrano, great granddaughter Sofia Rufrano; her son Anthony Colaluca Jr., daughter-in-law Tanya Colaluca, grandson Nicholas Colaluca, granddaughter-in-law Jillyan Colaluca, grandson Christopher Colaluca, granddaughter-in-law Heaven Colaluca, in uterine twin great grandsons Hayden & Parker Colaluca, grandson Matthew Colaluca, soon to be granddaughter-in-law Ashley Robshaw, great grandson Eli Colaluca; her daughter Donna Hunsberger; her sister Jo-Ann Federice, brother-in-law Bill (Biff) Federice; sister-in-law Josephine Lagana; brother-in-law Salvatore Colaluca, sister-in law Roseann Colaluca; her sister-in-law Emily Giorgi and many nieces and nephews.
Angie was a very hard working and determined woman. In addition to taking care of the children, household and cooking during the day she worked the 4 PM to midnight shift at the phone company. She also went back to school to get her cosmetology degree and worked at Tony's salon (Mr. Anthony's Hair Fashions in Jefferson Valley, NY) in addition to the telephone company on the weekends. Angie progressed her career at the phone company and went away to Boston for management school when she was promoted to a supervisor role. She taught all of her children to have a strong work ethic. She retired from New York Telephone Company in 1991 after a 34 year career.
When she retired to Florida, she enjoyed volunteering at the church, playing bingo, taking care of her grandsons and watching them play sports. She was an active member of the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister of the 10 am mass, member of the Italian American Club, and assisted with calling bingo. Angie had a very strong Catholic faith and experienced multiple miracles in her life.
She loved cooking and her favorite dishes were lasagna, manicotti, pasta & meatballs, baked ziti, chicken cacciatore, sausage & peppers, stuffed peppers, stuffed mushrooms, 7 fishes (Christmas Eve), Italian cheesecake (ricotta cheese), Italian knot cookies, sesame cookies and many more.
In January 2024, Angie was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. She fought this disease vigorously over the past year and was under palliative care for the last 2 months. She and the family are grateful to her many doctors and nurses at the Akerman Cancer Center in Mandarin Florida under the care of Dr. Scot Ackerman and Dr. Ryan Perkins and AdventHealth, under the care of Dr. Steven Clark, Dr. Issam Nasr and Dr. Padmaja Sai. She was blessed to have "angel" hospice caregivers with Bennie, Natasha, Cathy, Eve and Phyllis.
Angie had many friends and family who loved her very much and she will be missed dearly.
A visitation will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church (4600 Belle Terre Parkway, Palm Coast, FL 32137) on Saturday, March 22, 2025 in the memorial room of the church from 10 am until 11 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Angela Colaluca.
