Angel Luis Otero was born in December of 1942, to Rosa Montalvo and Jorge Otero on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. He married the love of his life, Julia Dalmau Sanchez in 1965. Their first child, Maria Cristina, joined the family in 1968. Dr. Otero completed his medical studies at the University of Puerto Rico and served his country as a surgeon during the Vietnam conflict between 1970-1972. They welcomed their second daughter Marta in 1972. Following his service in the United States Army, he completed a residency at the Mayo Clinic. In 1976 the Oteros moved to Texas, where Dr. Otero became one of the first orthopedic surgeons specializing in arthroscopic surgery in the DFW area.

Dr. Otero was a man of many facets. From a man who grew up on an island where the sea ran deep in his soul, to a childish prankster who was equally funny in two languages, Angelo was a genuine bon vivant. He was a person with perhaps the biggest sweet tooth known to man, and someone who had to be the “best” at any hobby he started (i.e. ice hockey, equestrian riding, cycling, learning about opera and art, shooting trap and skeet, and being and an amazing armchair sommelier).

Angelo grew up during a time when movie stars were his idols. He always went to work wearing a custom suit with “functional buttons,” and never left the house without his fedora hat. Angelo dressed as elegantly as Cary Grant while exuding Clark Gable’s magnetic charm. It is safe to say Angelo accomplished everything he ever dreamed about, and he carried his fun devilish grin into adulthood.

Over the years, people have told our family Angelo was the kindest man and most amazing surgeon; a testament to the man who called himself “a humble knee mechanic.” Angelo’s personality was larger than life, and his fun, festive and loving nature drew everyone to him. To know him was to love him. Angelo was also a very empathetic person. He enjoyed visiting the elderly, frail, and sick, bringing them communion, as his Catholic faith was strong as well.

Angelo was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a son, a brother, a surgeon, a teacher, and a friend to all who met him. He is now resting with the angels in our Lord’s embrace.

Survivors: Angelo leaves his wife, Julia Sanchez Otero; his daughter, Cristina Otero Adams and husband, Kenneth Adams; the Adams’ children, Alexander Adams and wife, Elayne Adams, and Angelica Adams; his daughter, Marta Otero Hubbard and husband, Clark Hubbard, the Hubbard’s sons, Brendan Hubbard, Bret Hubbard, and Brody Hubbard; his sister, Enid Otero Morell; and his brother, Jorge Luis Otero Jr.
