Obituary published on Legacy.com by Smith-Gallo Funeral Home - Guthrie on Sep. 8, 2025.
Anita Louise (Collins) Chambers, 90, of Crescent, Oklahoma, quietly went to be with her Lord and Savior while at home in Crescent on Saturday, September 6, 2025.
Anita was born on November 22, 1934 to Otto Karnes and Ida Dorothea (Fitzpatrick} Collins on the family farm where she joined sisters Dorothea (Friend) and Vera. She attended North Riverside School in the Abell community and Guthrie High School where she graduated in 1953. During her school years Anita's interests included art club, chorus, and FHA. After graduation, Anita worked as a telephone operator in downtown Guthrie.
In 1955, Anita married Ron Chambers of Crescent, and when he returned from service overseas with the Army, they built their forever home in Crescent in 1959. Anita lived there the rest of her life, feeding every bird and squirrel in the neighborhood each morning, welcoming one cool cat, several awesome dogs, and quite a few wondering and wandering souls in need of someone to talk to, a place to find direction, or a buck to tide them over. Their way of helping people out didn't usually come with a big banner on it, and their home was a landing and resting place for many family, friends, and passers-through over the years.
Anita and Ron owned Chambers Jewelry, and they also raised pigs and cattle. Anita continued the cattle business after Ron passed. In their spare time, they loved to go fishing! Ronnie cleaned 'em, Nita fried 'em. Anita was an all-around great cook and baker, being especially famous for her chicken 'n homemade noodles, and pies. Anita liked to travel and see new sights too -- near and far, and she visited many states and Mexico with Ron, traveled alone to Montana to visit her sister's family, and went on exciting adventures with her dear friend, Betty Hopfer.
Anita was a dedicated and active member of Abell Community Church, where she fellowshipped, studied, and served her entire life. The close, long-time friends that she had at church and in the community were very, very important to her. She loved them and was grateful for the love, friendship and support they showed her through the years and during her illness. So many are gone now, but thank you dear Marilyn & family, Betty, Gary, Cynthia, Mark, Kathy, Shirley, John, Trudy, Virginia, Tiffany, Suzanne, Daryl, Sarah … She also served many hot summers at Camp JOY, peeling potatoes, serving meals, and doing whatever she could to help out.
Many years after Ron passed away, Anita rekindled a friendship with Bob Moffitt when he started attending Abell Community Church. He and Anita had been country next-door neighbors and had attended the little North Riverside School together when they were children. Bob came back into Anita's life and never left until he went to be with the Lord in 2022. Anita got a new zest for life with Bob and she became part of the weekly and monthly gospel and bluegrass events around Logan County because of him. Many new friends were made and she was grateful and honored that they opened their arms to her. Going with Bob to Willow Creek each Sunday to share the gifts of music and prayer with the residents was one of her ways of ministering and she wouldn't miss it for anything.
Anita is preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Ida; husband, Ron; sisters, Dorthea and Vera; brother-in-law, Dick Friend; nephew, Erik Friend; great-niece, Emily Friend; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Anita is survived by her nieces and nephews, Richard Friend (TX), Ingrid (Friend) Ghassempour (OK), Greta Friend Haas (WA), Randi (Friend) and Randall Norris (OK), and Kurt Friend (OK); great-nieces and nephews Aaron (Amy) and Robin (Heather) Friend, Jesse, Luke (Kimberly) and Jacob (Natalie) Haas, Sean, Adina, and Heidi Ghassempour, Virginia (Robbie) Friend and Annabelle (Friend) and Daniel Saunders, Krista Wegner, Holli (Norris) and Cade Johnson, and Cody, Chris, and Hayli Norris; ten great-great nieces and nephews; and by cousin, Sharon Fitzpatrick.
Anita was the very last of her generation in our family. She was loved and we are grateful for the love that she brought to our lives, her fun and adventurous spirit, her memories of people and times passed, and her steadfast anchor in the storms. She will be terribly missed by her family and many others, but when the roll is called up yonder, she'll be there.
Graveside services for Anita will be held at 2:00 P.M, Monday, September 15, 2025 at Lawrie Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Smith-Gallo Funeral Home, 220 North 1st Street,
Guthrie, Oklahoma 73044.
There will not be any visitation and the casket will not be open at any time.
