WEST SAND LAKE Ann Grimshaw Clifford, 81, passed away peacefully Sunday, April 21, 2024 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Cohoes, Ann was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Clinton Grimshaw. She graduated with a bachelor's degree from Meredith College in Raleigh, NC. Following college, Ann returned to this area in 1964 and met the love of her life, Donald F. Clifford. They were married on June 5, 1965 and have enjoyed 59 wonderful years together.
Early in her career Ann had been employed as a social worker for the Albany County DSS. Then, she worked for the NYS Dept. of Education in teacher certification and was a researcher for the Children in the Community Program. She was always very active in her community; volunteering at the Sand Lake Library as well as being part of the PTA at West Sand Lake Elementary.
Ann was loved by family and friends, especially for her razor-sharp intelligence and thoughtfulness. She was known as the Poet Laurette of West Sand Lake for poems posted in local media, her parlor game prowess and encyclopedic memory. She took pride in her southern education and was an ardent supporter of Meredith College for women.
Ann was an outstanding mother who provided support, love and understanding to her children through their development to adulthood. The love and support she gave to them and Don will be treasured throughout their lives. In addition to her beloved husband Don, she is survived by her loving son and daughter, Matthew Clifford (Brenda Parker) of Chicago and Sara Clifford of Schenectady; by her adored grandchildren, Lily, William and Emmett Clifford all of Chicago as well as her sister-in-law, Karol Graber of Sand Lake. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Susan Grimshaw.
During her long illness, her smile and laughter captured the hearts of many who cared for her. The family is especially grateful to Pam, Carrie, Takiba, Houlaimatu and Eugenice who provided her care and love. The family thanks Rensselaer County Hospice, especially Grace and Adam for their care and compassion.
The family is forever grateful to Gail Markham, Ann's friend for over 50 years who stopped in almost every day to bring a smile to Ann's face.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes on Friday, April 26th from 4:30-5:30 p.m. followed by a time of sharing at 5:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Ann's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, 1003 Loudon Rd, Cohoes, NY 12047.
