DOUGHERTY

ANN ELIZABETH “NANCY” (NEE SCHAAKE)

Died peacefully on January 4, 2026 after a brief illness. She was 92 years old. Nancy left behind a lasting legacy of family, friends and neighbors. She was born on November 22, 1933 in Philadelphia, PA. She was the only child of Walter and Ann (nee Murtha) Schaake.

Nancy grew up in West Oak Lane and attended Cecilian Academy. After high school, she went to work for the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin and then PTC (now Septa). It was there that she first met her future husband, Thomas Dougherty. They continued to date while Tom spent 2 years in the Army at Fort Bragg and she moved on to a job at the Philadelphia Inquirer. Nancy and Tom married on February 27,1960 and then enjoyed a two-week honeymoon in Paris, Rome and Lisbon. They moved into their first home in Glenside where they had 8 children in 12 years. They moved into a much bigger house in Jenkintown in 1977 and once all the children were in school, Nancy got a job at Abington Savings Bank in Jenkintown where she worked for 25 years. She absolutely loved her job and co-workers and interacting with the public.

After she retired, she continued to enjoy going to the theater, eating out with friends, attending school and sporting events for her grandchildren and watching Jeopardy. For decades, she was an avid supporter of the Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue (DVGRR) through which she adopted 6 rescue dogs over the years. Tom sadly passed away in 1996 after 36 wonderful years of marriage. Nancy finally sold the big house in 2014 and moved in with her daughter Eileen and son-in-law Terence in Glenside where she remained until her death.

Nancy is survived by her devoted children Ann Michalski (Joseph), Julie Frantz (Michael), Clare Janton (Thomas), Thomas Dougherty (Mary), Katherine "Kitty" O’Hara (Timothy), Eileen Smith (Terence), Mark Dougherty (Alice) and Maura Dougherty, as well as 24 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to her visitation from 6-8 PM on Thursday, January 8th at the Joseph J. McGoldrick Funeral Home, 507 West Ave. Jenkintown, PA. A second visitation will be held Friday, January 9th from 9:15-10:15 AM followed by her funeral mass at 10:30 AM both held at Immaculate Conception BVM Church, 602 West Ave. Jenkintown, PA. Her interment will be held at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Nancy’s memory to DVGRR.org or Immaculate Conception BVM Church for the Stations of The Cross Fund or a charity of your choice.
