Ann Louise McElvain English was born December 26, 1924 in Sumter, South Carolina to the late Henry and Sarah Ann McElvain and grew up on Lookout Mountain in Tennessee in a family of nine. She began her education in a one room schoolhouse on Lookout Mountain and completed Howard High School with honors in Chattanooga, TN. Ann Louise went on to graduate with a Bachelor's of Science in Education degree from Winston Salem Teachers College in 1947 and began her teaching career at East Fifth Street School in Chattanooga, TN. While teaching, Ann pursued a Master's degree in Supervision from New York University. Ann taught for five years until she met and married the love of her life, the late Will English Jr of Cleveland, OH in July of 1953. They began their happy marriage in Cleveland, Ohio and in 1955, their only child Ann Denise English was born.
Over the course of thirty-five years, Ann taught fifth and sixth grades in two Cleveland Public Schools and was awarded Outstanding Elementary Teacher. Upon her retirement, Ann continued to substitute and raised nine foster children over the course of five years.
Ann English honored her Christian values as an active member of Mt. Zion Congregational Church UCC and served on the Usher Board, Junior League and on a host of committees. This leadership was in addition to her active participation in several social organizations including the Suburbanites, the Cleveland Friends (Formerly Cleveland Squaws), and Top Ladies of Distinction. Ann was also a proud 75 year active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
In addition to relatives, Sorors and friends she cherished so dearly, Ann's family was her greatest source of happiness. Ann leaves to mourn her passing and cherish her memory her beloved and devoted daughter Ann Denise English Lewis (Cleveland Hts., OH), the center of her heart and adoring granddaughter Dr. Annise Monique Lewis (Chicago, IL), three sister-in-laws and a wealth of nieces, nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews across the country to continue her legacy.

Mrs. English was my 5th grade teacher at Clara Tagg Brewer Elementary School. Mrs. English took learning seriously and wanted each of her students to learn. This was during the time if you were not doing well in class she would come to your house and speak with your parents to get you back on track. Her pride and joy was Denise.

To Denise and her granchildren remember the good times that you had with her.
