Ann Howard Obituary

Ann Marie Howard passed away on Monday, February 16, 2026 at her home surrounded by her loving family. Ann Marie was born on July 8, 1951 in Farmville, Virginia. As a child, she enjoyed spending time with her family on the farm and riding her horse, Sugar. She loved her brothers dearly and was often doted on by her family, who cherished her deeply. After graduating from Prince Edward Academy in 1969, she went on to pursue a career in nursing. She received her LPN license in 1972 and her RN degree in 1991.

While she was working as an ER nurse, she met the love of her life, Jeff; the two were married on February 22, 1975. Anyone who knew Ann Marie, knew how much she loved her family and her community. Nursing was more than just a career to her—it was a calling. Her favorite role was when she served as a Nursing Supervisor, leading with confidence, empathy, and professionalism while supporting both patients and staff. She took pride in taking exceptional care of those within her community, even when she was off the clock. She left a lasting impact on everyone she worked with and cared for, and her absence leaves a hole no one can fill.

In her spare time, she loved cheering on her kids at their football, softball, and volleyball games. Later in life, that joy only grew as she proudly took on the role of Grandma (or “Grammie”). She found great happiness in showing up for them and sharing in their accomplishments— even when it meant traveling to Texas, Brazil, South Africa, and more to make sure all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren felt supported. She is known for hosting and sharing her delicious Italian meals featuring her famous lasagna. Holidays, birthdays, and even small celebrations were special to her. Her favorite hobby was traveling the world with her husband, Jeff; their favorite destination was St. Thomas.

Ann Marie was preceded in death by her devoted and loving husband of 46 years, Jeff; her parents, Hugh ‘Nix’ and Willye Nixon; and her brother, Tommy Nixon. She is survived by her children: Diana Vardeman (Robert) of Wichita Falls, TX; Jeffrey Howard, Jr. (Sherry) of Albemarle, NC; Teri Harris of Farmville; Craig Howard (Christina) of Rice; Kathleen Redford (BK) of Burkeville; and her beloved bonus son, Caleb Varner (Alison) of Mexico City, MX.

Ann Marie also leaves behind her greatest blessings, her grandchildren: Brett Keith (Jacie), Bryan Keith (Belle), Troy Howard (Megan), Cody Howard (Tessa), Ainsley Harris, Kyle Redford, Abigail Harris, Landon Redford, Vivienne Varner, and Solomon Varner; and great-grandchildren: Kalynn Keith, Caysen Keith, Walker Keith, and Nolan Keith. She is also survived by her brothers: Joe Nixon (Bev) of Danville, VA; Jimmy Nixon of Richmond, VA; Jerry Nixon (Marty) of Forrest, VA; Bob Nixon (Susan) of Chester, VA; and John R. Nixon (Von) of Rice, VA. She also leaves behind her beloved nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to Dr. Rasheed and the wonderful staff at Centra Hematology & Oncology; Hannah Morris at Amedysis Hospice Care; along with the amazing group of caregivers and family who took such great care of Ann Marie during her most difficult days: Von Nixon, Kesha Jackson, Hannah-Gray Schmidt, Keemeitra Green, Alvina Rice, Dana Green, and Tajalin Watson.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Fuqua School Athletic Department, honoring Ann Marie’s lifelong joy in supporting her children and grandchildren from the sidelines. Fuqua School/Prince Edward Academy held a special place in her heart.

Ann Marie will be remembered for her compassionate spirit, her deep devotion to family, and the countless lives she touched through her care and kindness. Her legacy of love, service, and unwavering support for others will live on in all who knew her.
