Ann McHugh, 99, of Carroll, formerly of Royal, passed away on Friday, July 18, 2025, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll, Iowa. Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at St. Lawrence Church – St. John Paul II Parish in Carroll. The Celebrant is Father Patrick Behm. Concelebrants will be Fr. Merlin Schrad, Fr. Roger Schmit OSB and Fr. Stan Schmit. Music is by Kathy Halbur and Kate Cuddy. The Lectors are Sr. Bonnie McHugh DC and Alex McHugh. Ann's grandchildren and great-grandchildren will be Gift Bearers. Mass Servers are Kimber and Axel Kutschara. The Casket Bearers are Ann's grandchildren: Mark McHugh, Natalie McHugh, Sheri Kutschara, Randy Kenyon, Janet Priemer, Kirk Kenyon, Ryan Kenyon, Lauren Brown, Seth Macke, Hannah Miravalles, Sydney Macke, Alex McHugh, Grant McHugh, Jack McHugh and Max McHugh. Graveside services will follow at 3 p.m. at the Northlawn Memorial Cemetery in Spencer. A Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Monday, July 21, 2025, at the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. Additional visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 9:45 a.m. at the church on Tuesday. Funeral arrangements are under the guidance of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll and online condolences may be left for Ann's family at www.sharpfuneral.com. Ann Elizabeth, daughter of Cornelius and Gertrude (Billerbeck) Schmit, was born October 28, 1925, in McLean, Nebraska. She grew up and attended school in Osmond. After Ann graduated from Wayne State College, she taught school for a few years. On April 17, 1952, Ann was united in marriage with Lawrence McHugh. The family made their home and farmed near Royal, Iowa. Ann first worked at Neisner's. As a Nurse Aide, Ann worked for more than 30 years at the Spencer Hospital. Ann liked being active. She cleaned her church and for many years delivered meals for dinner date. Ann loved spending time with her family, and enjoyed playing cards, crocheting, crafts, and gardening & flowers. Ann had many unique expressions including: Poppycot, What of it, H-E-double toothpicks, I Love It, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, and Crazy As A Hoot Owl. Ann is survived by her children: Sr. Bonnie McHugh DC of San Antonio, TX; Colleen (Ron) Kenyon of Whittemore; Robert (Carol) McHugh of Kimballton; Kathleen (David) Macke of Carroll; Keith (Gail) McHugh of Omaha, NE; and Kristin McHugh of Los Angeles, CA; a daughter-in-law Margaret McDermott of Harrisburg, SD; 15 grandkids; 12 great-grandkids; her siblings: Fr. Roger Schmit OSB; Rita Aschoff; Jerome (Pat) Schmit; and Norbert (Pat) Schmit; and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lawrence; a son Philip McHugh; a granddaughter Lexi Macke; her siblings: Sr. Lucretia Schmit OSF; Vincent (Shirley) Schmit; Sr. Barbara Schmit OSF; Cork Schmit; Lucille Knievel (husbands Greg Thramer and Joe Knievel); and Hank (Carolyn) Schmit; a brother-in-law John Aschoff; and by Lawrence's siblings: Lucy (Kenneth) Perry; Mildred (Jim) Paseka; Cleta McHugh; Clifford McHugh; Mabel (Voyne) Harris; Alicia (Marion) Mahoney; and Theresa (Clarence) Topf.

To Ann´s family, remember in your grief you are surrounded by the love of God. The big family gatherings on earth were always wondrous. When you enter heaven and experience the glory of God, you will see Ann and she´ll say "Let´s party." For now, we wish you peace and strength. You will see Ann again.
